Katpadi is located at .^[1] It has an average elevation of 224 metres (734 feet).
Katpadi was once a village and was upgraded to a panchayat town. It is also a Assembly Constituency. The original Katpadi village is now called Old katpadi which lies on the District road which connects Thiruvalam and Gudiyaaththam. Katpadi lies in the northern side of River Paalaar. Katpadi is the northern suburb of Vellore town. Andhra Pradesh border is just 5 minute drive from Katpadi.
A railway line which connects Chennai and Bengaluru paasses through this panchayat town and this station is called Katpadi Junction. Katpadi also lies on the Chittor-Cuddalore State Highway SH9.
The Katpadi Junction is the station which connects the Vellore town with Chennai, Bengaluru, Thiruppathi, Coimbatore, Mysore and other Cities in North and West. Vellore town, Thiruvannamalai and Villipuram will be connected to Katpadi junction through broad gauge.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,^[2] Katpadi had a population of 15,925. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Katpadi has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 65%. In Katpadi, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Katpadi Railway Junction is one of the important junction in Southern Railway with code KPD. The number of commuters have increased tremendously mainly due to Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore Institute of Technology and Thiruppati.

The most recent being naming suramangalam junction as Salem junction in 90s as the later attained city status.
