Geography


Kashima is located about 60 km southwest of Saga City. It borders the Ariake Sea to the east and Nagasaki Prefecture to the southwest. The southern area contains the Tara Mountains and the northern area consists of open plains along the coast, and the city proper.

History



1889-04-01 - The modern municipal system is established. The current city region consists of six villages: Minami-Kashima, Kita-Kashima, Hachihongi, Fureda, Nogomi, and Nanaura, all in Fujitsu District.

1912-12-01 - Minami-Kashima Village becomes Minami-Kashima Town, and Kita-Kashima Village is renamed Kashima Village.

1918-08-03 - Hachihongi Village becomes Hama Town.

1954-04-01 - Kashima Town, Hama Town, Kashima Village, Furueda Village and Nogomi Village all merge to form Kashima City.

1955-03-01 - Part of Nanaura Village is incorporated into Kashima City, while the remaining portion is incorporated into Tara Town.

Festivals


The Kashima Gatalympics is held every May in Hama-chÅ, a part of Kashima City. This event involves playing a variety of sports in the mudflats of the Ariake Sea.

Tourism


YÅ«toku Inari Shrine (ç¥å¾³ç¨²è·ç¥žç¤¾), one of the three biggest and most famous Inari shrines in Japan. There is a bus from Hizen-Kashima Station to YÅ«toku Inari Shrine.
