JOHN LYNG

(August 22, 1905 - January 18, 1978) was a Norwegian politician from the Conservative Party. He was Prime Minister of Norway from August 28 to September 25, 1963 in a coalition government of the Conservative Party, the Center Party, the Christian Democratic Party, and the Liberal Party. His brief time as prime minister came after the two representatives from the Socialist Peoples' Party joined a slim 76-74 no confidence vote against the labor cabinet of Einar Gerhardsen following the Kings Bay Affair, a series of mining accidents at Ny Ã…lesund at Svalbard. The socialist vote of no confidence was merely a protest and demonstration, and the labor government was restored a month later.
Although the John Lyng government failed to govern for more than a month it did prove that the non-socialist parties were capable of making a coalition, and after the parliamentary elections in 1965 the non-socialists returned to power with Per Borten as prime minister, and John Lyng as foreign minister.
