JABAL USDUM

'Jabal Usdum' or "Mountain of Sodom" or "Mount Sodom" is a hill in the southwestern part of the Dead Sea in Israel. It is most remarkable because it is made almost entirely of rock salt. It is approximately five miles long, three miles wide, 742 feet above the Dead Sea water level, and yet 557 feet ''below'' sea level. Because of weathering, sometimes portions become separated. One of these separate pillars has been labeled "Lot's Wife," which is a reference to the Biblical account of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
