'Ion Gigurtu' (
1886,
Turnu Severin-
1959) was a
Romanian politician who served a brief term as
Prime Minister of Romania in
1940 (from
4 July to
4 September), under the personal regime of
King Carol II.
Ion Gigurtu had economic and political interests in Nazi Germany and his government was the first one to include members of the
Iron Guard (
Horia Sima) and to propose anti-Jewish legislation modelled on the
Nuremberg Laws passed in
Nazi Germany.
After the
Soviet-imposed and
Romanian Communist Party-led government took over Romania (''see
Communist Romania''), Giugurtu was tried for repression of the Communist Party and sentenced to 15 years of prison. His wife Maria was also arrested and spent time in prison.
