The 'Invisible Rail', ''Habroptila wallacii'' also known as 'Wallace's Rail' or 'Drummer Rail' is a large, up to 35cm long, flightless
rail. It is the only member of monotypic genus ''Habroptila''. Both sexes are similar with dark brown plumage, bare red orbital skin, long reddish orange
bill and legs.
An
Indonesian
endemic, the Invisible Rail is confined to swamp forests and wetlands of
Halmahera,
north Maluku. The diet consists mainly of plant shoots, vegetation matters and insects. The call is
drum-like sound with loud scream.
Due to ongoing habitat loss, small population size, limited range and hunting in some areas, the Invisible Rail is evaluated as
Vulnerable on the
IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
