INTERSTATE 680 (CALIFORNIA)
'Interstate 680' (abbreviated 'I-680') is a north-south interstate freeway in California's San Francisco Bay Area. I-680 spans just over 70 miles (113.4 km) from its southern terminus in San Jose to its northern terminus in Fairfield. The freeway serves as the outer East Bay's main connection to the North Bay and to northern areas of the Central Valley, including Sacramento. It and Interstate 280 form a partial beltway around the Bay Area.

Route description
I-680's southern terminus is at the U.S. 101/Interstate 280 interchange in San Jose. From there, it runs north to Fremont before it travels northeast to Sunol. 680 then goes on a roughly due north direction through the East Bay cities of Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Martinez. It then crosses the Carquinez Strait over the Benicia-Martinez Bridge into Benicia before terminating at the Cordelia Junction with Interstate 80 in Fairfield.
The portion of 680 from Sunol to Alamo is very close to the Calaveras Fault, and structures along and over the freeway may sustain significant damage in the event of a major earthquake on the Calaveras Fault.
History
I-680 succeeded State Route 21 as the primary Fremont-Benicia highway in the mid-1960s. At that time, I-680 was constructed between the newly truncated Route 21's terminus in Benicia and Interstate 80 (née US 40) in Vallejo. In 1976, that segment became Interstate 780, and the 680 designation was moved to the last remaining portion of Route 21, which connected Benicia to the Cordelia Junction in Fairfield.
