INTERSTATE 190 (NEW YORK)

'Interstate 190' (abbreviated 'I-190') runs 28.34 miles (45.61 km) from I-90 near Buffalo, New York to Lewiston, New York via Niagara Falls. Parts of this highway were built on former Lehigh Valley Railroad and Erie Canal rights-of-way. It may also be referred to by locals as 'The One-Ninety', 'The Thruway', or the 'Niagara Expressway'. Officially, I-190 from I-90 north to New York State Route 384 is named the 'Niagara Thruway' and is a component of the New York State Thruway system. The remainder to Lewiston is the Niagara Expressway (maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation).
I-190 is the only three-digit Interstate Highway to reach the Canada-United States border and is currently the only three-digit interstate signed as such to touch any international border (though it will eventually be joined by Interstate 905 in California). Interstate 110 in Texas, the only other existing three-digit interstate to touch an international border, is unsigned along its length. I-190 continues across the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge and into Ontario as Highway 405, a short freeway spur to the Queen Elizabeth Way. The interstate also has an interchange leading to the Peace Bridge, which also crosses the international border and becomes Queen Elizabeth Way on the Canadian side.
In 1957, the route was assigned the number 'Interstate 90N', as intercity routes were numbered before the three-digit Interstates were assigned to the shorter intracity routes. It was soon renumbered to I-190, possibly with the final numbering in 1959.
In the early 1990s, the maintenance fees for I-84 in downstate New York were transferred to the New York State Thruway Authority and the monies for that purpose came from tolls on I-190 in downtown Buffalo. On Monday, October 30, 2006, the Thruway Authority voted to return maintenance costs to the New York State Department of Transportation and the tolls in Buffalo are planned to be removed. Collection of the toll stopped that day. The I-190 tolls are considered to be one of the principal causes of highway congestion in Buffalo. Republican and Democratic gubernatorial candidates John Faso and Eliot Spitzer had previously pledged to end the thruway tolls.
On October 30, 2006, the Thruway Authority eliminated the tolls on the Buffalo section of the I-190. The tolls further north on the Grand Island Bridges still remain.
