Are the threats so great and the science so certain that there really is only one course of action? - Institute of Ideas Professor Mike Hulme is the Founding Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, UK, and is based in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA) where he has worked for the last 18 years. His general research interest is global climate change – the science/policy interface –but specialising in the construction and application of climate change scenarios for impact, adaptation and integrated assessment. Professor Hulme has prepared climate scenarios and reports for the UK Government (including the UKCIP98 and UKCIP02 scenarios), the European Commission, UNEP, UNDP, WWF-International and the IPCC. He was a co-ordinating lead author for the chapter on ‘Climate scenario development’ for the Third Assessment Report of the United Nations IPCC, as well as a contributing author for several other chapters. He is leading the EU Integrated Project ADAM (Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies) during the period 2006-9, which comprises a 26-member European research consortium contributing research to the development of EU climate policy.

	Big Island Institute Jeffers Foundation joins forces with Orono Community Education to develop the Big Island Institute. A moderately sized island in a large lake west of Minneapolis, MN has a storied past and was made accessible by the City of Orono, MN who owns part of the island. It was decided to create a "summer institute" or environmental immersion experience for elementary age children. They would be brought there daily on a boat and there would be students from city schools as well as suburbs. The students would learn from naturalists to fish, sample water, study aquatic and earth based flora and fauna and learn about the Island history and indigenous peoples

	Climate Change, Migration and Environmental Refugees As the science of climate change becomes increasingly well understood, the ramifications of projected increases in temperature, changes to rainfall patterns, rises in sea-level and increase in extreme weather events require attention from policy-makers worldwide. This is particularly apparent in relation to migration, refugees and international security, with climate change acting as a threat multiplier to exacerbate existing tensions and instability.
