INFLANTY

'Inflanty' was the portion of the Duchy of Livonia retained by the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth after the Treaty of Oliva in 1660. The name ''Inflanty'' itself comes from German name for Livonia: ''Livland'', subsequently Polonised.
Livonia had been part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — and, from 1561, the Polish-Lithuanian — after the Livonian Brothers of the Sword were secularised in the Union of Wilno.
Most of Livonia was conquered by Sweden in 1620s, in the course of the Polish–Swedish Wars. Under Swedish rule, the territory became known as Swedish Livonia (), which was formally recognised by the Treaty of Oliva. The part of Inflanty remaining in the Commonwealth was informally known as ''Polish Livonia'' () and was roughly equivalent to today's Latgale, one of the four cultural regions of Latvia recognised in the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia.
