![]() | AFL vs. CIO split in 1935 Organized labor began to grow rapidly during the Great Depression. The growth and expansion into "mass production" industries brought in unskilled and semi-skilled workers who did not fit into the traditional craft union model of the American Federation of Labor. The result was a splitting off in 1935 of the CIO which practiced industrial unionism, the subject of this video. The split was not healed for 20 years. More recently, the AFL-CIO has again seen a splitting off of major unions in the Change to Win coalition. |

![]() | The Battle of Blair Mountain In the largest uprising in the United States outside of the Civil War, thousands of miners waged armed warfare in Logan County, West Virginia against mine owners, the sheriff and federal troops in an effort to unionize the mines in 1921. The battle marked the first time U.S. troops were ordered to bomb civilians. The United Mine Workers (UMW) enjoyed widespread support among the general population and were the first industrial union to admit African Americans on an equal basis. The union leader Bill Blizzard eventually surrendered his army in order to avoid further civilian casulties. Blizzard was acquitted in court of insurrection. Future UMW & Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) leader John L. Lewis fought alongside Blizzard at the Battle of Blair Mountain and succeeded in getting recognition for the union 14 years later in southern West Virginia. |

![]() | Mumia Abu-Jamal -- What Worker's Think? In the decade since NAFTA, the nation's service economy employs the largest percentage of workers, with unions like SEIU (Service Employees Industrial Union) having the biggest memberships. Many are paid frightfully low wages, but it would be even worse were it not for bargaining units like SEIU. For millions of young, working class kids, service jobs are the only viable ones available, if at all. And service jobs virtually always provide lower wages than manufacturing jobs. As the presidential campaigns roll around again, listen to what the guys and gals, of either of the major corporate parties have to say about NAFTA, FTAA, or CAFTA. Chances are, most of them won't have squat to say, or will even support it. That's because, for most politicians, greasing the palms of corporations is the easiest way to raise campaign coffers, and most would rather shoot off a toe than piss off a potential corporate donor. |
