'InBev' (, ) is the largest beer company in the industry. While its core business is beer, InBev also has a strong presence in the soft drinks market in Latin America. It employs about 86,000 people and is headquartered in Leuven, Belgium.
In 2004, the Belgian company Interbrew and the Brazilian company AmBev combined, to create InBev the world's largest brewer.
InBev has operations in over 30 countries and sales in over 130 countries.[1] In 2006 it had a market capitalisation of €30.6 billion and net profit of €3.2 billion on sales of €13.3 billion.
It has just announced to its suppliers in UK and the rest of Europe that in order to achieve its vision to move 'from Biggest to Best' it will be 'harmonising' its payment terms by withholding payments to its suppliers in these areas for 60 days after the end of the month of invoice, which will inevitably put pressure on smaller suppliers. This change is apparently to commence from 'the next payment that you would expect on or after the 17th June 2007.' This has led to the company being named in the Forum of Private Business (FPB) Hall of Shame, and the Office of Fair Trading has been notified of the situation.
There are also discussions among industry insiders that InBev is pursuing a 'hostile merger' with Anheuser-Busch.

History

InBev's roots can be traced back to Den Horen in Leuven in 1366.
In 1987 the two largest breweries in Belgium merged: Artois, located in Leuven, and Piedboeuf, located in Jupille signaling the formation of the single company which was to become Interbrew.
AmBev was a Brazilian beer company formed by a merger in 1999 between the Brahma and Antarctica breweries. It had a dominant position in South America and the Caribbean.
2004 marked the most significant event in the company's recent history: the combination of Interbrew and AmBev to create InBev.

Brands

Inbev precursor Interbrew used the slogan: "The World's Local Brewer" but after combining with AmBev this was discontinued.

Price fixing

In December 2001 Interbrew, Danone (former owner of Kronenbourg, and two other smaller brewers were fined €91m for operating a cartel in Belgium while four Luxembourg companies were fined €448,000 the same month. Heineken and Grolsch fined for price-fixing

InBev caused protests, including one by the Flemish Parliament, when it announced in 2005 and confirmed in 2006 that it would move the Hoegaarden Brewery to the municipality of Jupille in Liège.
