HIERONYMUS GRAF VON COLLOREDO

(Redirected from Hieronymus von Colloredo)
Hieronymus von Colloredo-Mannsfeld (1732-1812)
'Hieronymus Graf von Colloredo', or Count 'Hieronymus von Colloredo'. (31 May 1732 - 20 May 1812) was Prince-Bishop of Gurk from 1761 and Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1771 until 1803, when the Archbishopric was secularized.
He is known as the first patron of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He does, however, become exceptionally annoyed with Mozart's frequent absences. After a number of arguments, he ultimately dismissed him from his service with the words, "Mag er geh'n, ich brauch' ihn nicht!" ("May he leave, I don't need him!").
Prince-Archbishop Colloredo is featured in the movie Amadeus. In the movie, he is played by American actor Nicholas Kepros.
In the musical "Mozart!" he was, among others, portrayed by the famous Uwe Kröger, an international musical-superstar. He served as an antagonist to Wolfgang (in the song "Wo ist Mozart?" he sings the quote "Mag er geh´n, ich brauch' ihn nicht!") but in the end of the musical he realizes that Mozart and his enchanting music win. (His song "Wie kann es möglich sein?" tells us that he is a deeply religious man, he had all of his life depended on god and logic, but Mozart, a young, brash composer and musician, succeeds in the end. "Wie kann es möglich sein, dass die Vernunft, die diese Welt erhellen soll, besiegt wird vom Zauber der Musik?" ("How can it be possible that logic which was supposed to illuminate this world is defeated by the magic of music?"
