HERMITAGE (GRAPE)

'Hermitage grape' is the name given to one of a handful of different wine grape varieties in different wine growing regions of the world.
In Australia it is another name for the Shiraz grape, the most widely planted red wine grape in that country. It is so called because Shiraz is the principal grape that makes up the world-famous Hermitage AOC, from the Northern Rhône.
In South Africa and parts of Europe, it is the name given to the Cinsault grape. While not common, the name lives on in South Africa's native fine wine grape: the Pinotage, a cross between Cinsault ('Hermitage') and Pinot Noir.
