HENRY PRESCOTT

'Henry Prescott' (May 4, 1783November 18, 1874) colonial governor born in Kew, England and died in London, England.
Prescott joined the Royal Navy in 1796 and served in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic wars. He was appointed governor of Newfoundland in 1834.
Prescott had no previous experience as a governor and the turbulent times in Newfoundland coupled with the behaviour of the House of Assembly caused him to submit his resignation in January 1839. It was not accepted. He stayed on for another two years and resigned a second time in May 1841. Prescott then returned to naval life.
Prescott Street in St. John's is so named for Henry Prescott.
