A 'grocer' is a dealer in staple
foodstuffs, such as
meats,
produce or
dairy products, and other household supplies. Such goods are, hence, ''groceries''.
Sometimes used when
greengrocer is meant.
Nowadays, the term is all but synonymous with
supermarket, since the early supermarkets began as chains of grocery stores.
