Green Sands Beach, view from cliff above, May 2007
'Green Sands Beach' (or 'Mahana Beach') is an unusual feature of the
Island of Hawaii. It is made from a partially collapsed
cinder cone rich in the mineral
olivine, giving the sand an uncommon green color. The beach contains the highest concentration of green sand in the state of
Hawaii.
Located near
Ka Lae, it requires about a 2 mile (3.2 km) hike or a good
4WD vehicle to access.
