 | Maple Sugar (Olde tyme fiddle piece) This one, written by Ward Allen, is one of the most popular fiddle tunes ever and a good foot stomper. I actually learned it off Ward's album back 37 years ago, and have of course, adapted some double stringing embellishment, since this is the way my mentors, Graham Townsend and Johnney Givens played it. One time at a fiddling contest I goofed when I ripped into this song in place of a reel....(ooopsy), a fiddler came up to me and asked me if I realized what I had done. I hadn't actually, but this song is probably more of a "rag" than a reel. Good thing I was only competing against myself in that catagory cause otherwise I should have been disqualified...lol!!! They can be pretty strict at these competitions. Oh well, Rufus gets spooked at the end of this song...me thinks he saw his own shadow or something....hehehe! |
