 | Giant Black Sea Bass The giant sea bass (Stereolepis gigas), also known as the black sea bass, is a fish native to the northern Pacific Ocean. With its conspicuous size and a curious nature, it is surprising that relatively little is known about its behavior and biology. There are published reports of giant sea bass reaching a size of 2.5 m (8.2 feet) and a weight of up to 255 kg (562 lbs). However in Charles F. Holder's book The Channels Islands published in 1910, the author claims specimens taken from the Gulf of California attained 800 pounds (360 kg). In the eastern Pacific its range is from Humboldt Bay, California to the Gulf of California, Mexico, most common from Point Conception southward. In the western Pacific it is found in the sea around Japan. It usually stays in relatively shallow water, near kelp forests, drop offs or rocky bottoms. Giant sea bass were once a relatively common inhabitant of Southern California waters, yet in the 1980s it was facing the threat of local extinction off the California coast. Beginning in the late 1800s, the species supported both a commercial fishery taking hundreds of thousands of kg annually, and a sport fishery that also landed hundreds of fish each year. Spear fishermen also exploited the giant sea bass, first as free divers, and then after the mid 1950s using scuba gear. Often the divers would target the species when they moved into shallow water during the summer months to spawn. By the late 1970s, biologists with the California State Department of Fish and Game, recognized that the local population of giant sea bass was in serious trouble. Actions were taken, resulting in protection from commercial and sport fishing that went into effect in 1982. Yet for almost two decades encounters with giant sea bass were scarce. The giant sea bass reproduces slowly with a population doubling time of more than 14 years and is still listed as critically endangered. |
 | Dennis Leeflang - Time & Independence - Lesson 2 Dennis Leeflang - Time & Independence - Lesson 2 - Adding eighth notes Once we've managed to tightly time all hits together, we'll start adding eighth notes. First measure will be all quarters like before, then we'll start by letting the left foot (hi-hat) play eighth notes during one measure. Then back to all quarter notess again, for one measure. Next measure we'll double the left hand (snare) to eighth notes. Then back to playing all quarters again for one measure. After that we'll double the right foot (bass drum), back to quarters again, and then the right hand (ride cymbal). Again one measure of all quarters, and then back to the bass drum. We'll go from left to right, back to the left, back to the right. doubling limbs in this order: hi-hat - snare - bass drum - ride - bass drum - snare - hi-hat.... And so forth. This will constantly be the order in all exercises. Once confortable with the changes, try leaving out the basic quarter note measure inbetween the change-overs from doubling one limb to the other (like in the second half of the video below). Try not to change the tempo while playing the exercise. Once you're comfortable with it, stop and start it at a slightly higher tempo. What a difference a week makes? Just seven days ago, Mexican side Club America walked away from a hard-fought Group 5 opener against Universidad Catolica with all three points thanks to an extratime goal. This week, Argentine powerhouse River Plate turned the tables, winning 2-1 over America in the closing seconds of the game. Ariel Ortega was the hero, beating America goalkeeper Armando Navarrete in the dying minutes of the game. "We are the rightful winners," Ortega told the press after the game. "We went looking for the victory in this match and we got it." In front of 40,000 fans at Monumental Stadium, both teams looked to attack from the opening whistle. The first chance fell to Ortega in the 6th minute. "El Burrito" collected a corner kick, faked a left-footed cross, and cut inside onto his right foot. But his low shot clanged off the post. At the other end, coach Ruben Omar Romano asked his wingbacks, Jose Castro and Oscar Rojas, to push up into the attack, and the strategy worked beautifully in the 15th minute. Juan Mosqueda infiltrated River's backline and put a perfect cross into Salvador Cabanas. The Paraguayan striker buried the ball in the net with a powerful header. After the goal, America took further control of the game. Mosqueda came to life in the midfield and Rojas put several dangerous balls into the box from the left. But just as America looked close to doubling their lead, River answered. In the 37th minute, Sebastian Abreu delivered a beautiful headed cross for fellow forward Colombian star Radamel Falcao to knock past the helpless Navarrete. Both sides made offensive changes at the break. River coach Diego Simeone gave Chilean creative midfielder Alexis Sanchez an opportunity, and America's Romano countered with Federico Higuain, last week's game-winning goal hero. The feisty Argentine had once played for River, but it was Sanchez who made the bigger difference. River attacked relentlessly for the next 45 minutes. Falcao, Ortega, and Sanchez all had good chances, but Navarrete was up to the task each time. But he could do nothing stop Ortega's powerful game-winning strike. Despite the loss, America finally looked to be forming a collective idea. Romano seems to be putting together a formidable, balanced starting line up. Mosqueda continues to show flashes of creativity. but sometimes "puts too much sour cream on the tacos," as the Mexicans say. That is, he tries to be too fancy instead of effective. The young midfielder needs to settle down and do what he does best: open the field up for Rojas and Castro on the wings. But the man of the match was Navarrete.
