![]() | GARY PUCKETT and the union gap: "WOMAN, WOMAN"/"YOUNG GIRL' The late, Disc Jockey Hy Lit (Hyman Aaron), filmed what could be some of the earliest footage of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. Although the video is on the dark side (and Gary is lip-singing), for the enthusiast, this is a supremely rewarding sequence! "Woman, Woman" was written by Dick Glaser and Jerry Fuller produced the UNION GAP'S first album. A hugely musical and engaging song, it brought the group swiftly into the public vogue in late 1967. It also introduced us to what would be the 'Hallmark' of Gary Puckett's fantastic singing style and vocal range! What more could one say about FULLER'S next number, "Young Girl", the bands huge single in early 1968. This terrific song's melody is timeless and with PUCKETT'S wonderfully powerful voice, it quickly became the standard bearer for the band, pushing them to the height of popularity and sales of that year both artistically and commercially. THIS, WAS A POP MUSIC VOICE AT ITS FINEST!! |
![]() | Worn Out Engine - Blind Boy Fuller - Acoustic Blues Blind Boy Fuller (Fulton Allen 1907-1941) began playing guitar in 1927, shortly before losing his sight. Depending on music for his living, he worked with Sonny Terry, Gary Davis and Bull City Red in the streets of Durham, North Carolina. He became a popular and influential recording artist, cutting no fewer than 129 songs in the six years before his death. It's now recognised that Fuller blended his own ideas with those of numerous forerunners and contemporaries, among them Buddy Moss, Josh White, Gary Davis, Blind Blake and Blind Lemon Jefferson. The resulting synthetis had an enormous influence in the Piedmont states and beyond, and in that sense Fuller indeed father a style. As a songwriter, he was imaginative and poetic on slow blues, and often ingenious on up-tempo rags and bawdy numbers. I first heard this song by Carolina bluesman Baby Tate accompanied by the incomparable Peg Leg Sam, a great harmonica player (look for his vid on youtube). Later I found a transcription of Fuller's version in a Stefan Grossman tabbook "Masters of Country Blues Guitar - Blind Boy Fuller" Both men played it out of A position but I changed it to the key of G, using different aspects of Fuller's and Baby Tate's playing. I love that cool descending bass lick. Guitar : all mahogany 1927 Supertone Handkraft, aka the "Lindbergh" model due to the airplane shaped bridge Of course, I'm waring my "Montecristi" Panama hat, made in Ecuador (the true origin of Panama hats btw) do you like solo acoustic country blues...? check out my new cd at http://www.youtunerecords.com/daddystovepipe.html |

![]() | GARY PUCKETT: "YOUNG GIRL" (from IN EUROPE) 1998 Gary sings a recent version of 'Young Girl' from the "Europa" album with a keyboard and backround singers arrangement. His voice is in excellent form here, singing in the key of "E" which takes him a half tone higher to start the number than when he first recorded it in 1968!! (Listen to the 3rd verse, "Get out of here, before I have the time"...his voice glistens!) This is a fine version of THE UNION GAP's huge record, and once again portray's the remarkable singing voice that brought Gary Puckett to fame some fourty years ago!! ENJOY |

![]() | GARY PUCKETT: "LADY WILLPOWER" (from 'In Europe') 1998 Gary Puckett produced the "Europe" CD in 1998, which included an updated recording of 'Ladywillpower'. This arrangement features Electric Keyboards accompanying Gary's fantastic vocal, which in many ways captures the essence of the original release with the UNION GAP in 1968. "In Europe" (Europa, oversees release) also compiles some excellent ORIGINAL songs that Gary wrote and is a "must" purchase for all enthusiasts! |

![]() | GARY PUCKETT & the union gap: "YOUNG GIRL" TOP OF THE POPS 6/6/68~~~A very 'rare' sequence of "Young Girl" being featured as the #1 song of the week on the now legendary British Television Show, "Top of the Pops". As is obvious, the band was not there to perform, so a VIDEO MONTAGE was displayed( along with the band's pre-recorded song) as the venue for the lively audience and dancers. A CUTE BIT OF NOSTALGIA! |
