GARGAMELLE

The Gargamelle bubble chamber, now exhibited at CERN

'Gargamelle' was a giant particle detector at CERN, designed mostly for the detection of neutrinos. With a diameter of nearly 2 meter and 4.8 meter in length, Gargamelle was a bubble chamber that held nearly 12 cubic meters of freon (CF3Br). It operated from 1970 to 1978 at the CERN PS and SPS.
The name derives from the giantess 'Gargamelle' in the works of Rabelais; she was Gargantua's mother.
