GANGADHARA

Hindu Mythology: Shiva takes the weight of the mighty Ganges in his locks. She is released through the locks of his hair, which prevents the river's force from destroying earth, and the waters bring purification to the planet.

'Gangadhara' or 'Gangadharan' (meaning 'One who wears Ganga' in Sanskrit) refers to a form of the Hindu god Shiva, in His aspect as the one who tamed the river Goddess Ganga, so that She would flow from His locks to the Earth.
Gangadhara captures and controls the river Ganges with his locks, whose descent from the heavens would have deluged the world. She is released through the locks of his hair, which prevents the river from destroying earth.
According to another legend, Lord Shiva has two wives, Parvati and Ganga. To protect her from the wrath of Parvati, his First wife, Shiva hid Ganga in his hair. And this is the origin of River Ganga (Ganges). In actual fact River Ganges originates from Mount Kailas (Tibet), the abode of Shiva.
