'Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology' ('GMIT') (Irish ''Institiúid Teicneolaíochta na Gaillimhe-Maigh Eo'') formerly known as ''Regional Technical College, Galway'' or ''Galway RTC'' (Irish: ''Coláiste Teicniúil Réigiúnach, Gaillimh'') is an Institute of Technology based in Galway, Ireland with centres throughout County Galway and County Mayo. The institution offers a variety of courses in business, engineering, and science, and has recently expanded into agriculture and nursing.
In 1976 the institution became the first Regional Technical College to receive degree recognition, this was the ''Bachelor of Arts in Hotel and Catering Management'' programme which is still obtainable at the institution.
The body which represents the students within the Institute is called the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology Students' Union.
GMIT has campuses in Dublin Rd, Galway (Head campus), Cluainmhuire, Monivea Rd, Galway (centre for art and design and film), Letterfrack, Connemara (Furniture design), Mountbellew (agricultural studies) and Castlebar (Mayo centre and campus for areas such as nursing and outdoor education)
The founding director of GMIT was Gay Corr who remained director until his retirement to be replaced by Mrs. Marion Coy.
In recent years GMIT has become renowned for its extension on its Dublin Rd campus whose architectural design and structure has influenced areas such as the Wellpark retail area.
