GMW-2007 Toronto Gun Violence Victims+Prevention Programs
The dedicated staff members of Rogers Television's "GTA's Most Wanted" show have been assisting Toronto and area Crime Stoppers programs to deliver media messages to the public to help solve violent crimes in Toronto, and most importantly .. to help prevent violence in Toronto by working together, especially with the youth of Toronto. This video features a plea for tips for five unsolved murders that were committed with guns in Toronto, ON Canada in 2007. It also features a youth engagement project facilitated by the Argos Foundation Stop the Violence-- a BMX Bike Park -- that was featured at the 2007 Grey Cup in Toronto in Novemer/2007. The solution to violence in Toronto does not rest with any one group or organization. It is a shared responsibility. Everyone can do their part. The focus of "GTA's Most Wanted" show on highlighting the positive youth engagement being done "Ready For Enjoyment...Ready For Employment", and not just the negative stories of gun violence is visionary.. and much needed in Toronto. The number of groups and organizations at all levels that we can have working together to achieve the common goal of peace and harmony in our great city can only increase from the amazing example of community collaboration with our youth that is showcased in this video. The BMX Bike park was the vision of Al Crawford of the city of Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation Department, in collaboration with BMX Bike Park owner, and builder, retired teacher Michael Heaton and the Toronto Crime Stoppers School Officer/Legal Graffiti Art Coordinator Constable Scott Mills. The park was open to youth to ride and enjoy at the Wallace Emerson Community Centre, 1260 Dufferin St, Toronto for the spring, summer and fall of 2007. Two youth who are aspiring Olympic BMX caliber riders from Toronto -- Jamie Burke and Chris Silva -- were hired by the City of Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation Department to teach BMX Bike Skills to over 450 youth using this park. The ramps were painted with positive graffiti art under the direction of Scott Mills throughout the year. The 'Journey of the BMX Bike Park to Grey Cup' is captured with over 160 videos at www.YouTube.com/TorontoBMX . The bike park is currently in storage on the stage of the Molson Amphitheatre awaiting an opportunity for a year round indoor location in the downtown Toronto area. The next scheduled event for the BMX Bike Park is the Toronto Bicycle Show at the Direct Energy Centre, CNE Grounds, Toronto, ON Canada on March 7, 8, and 9th, 2007. See www.torontobmx.ca for more details. For information on the 2007 CASH FOR GUNS campaign, visit the group called 'Cash For Guns' at www.facebook.com . GMW - SPECKZ (Keegan Allen) Murder, Toronto, Canada
Keegan Allen, also known as 'Speckz' was murdered on Thanksgiving Monday 2007 in Toronto, ON Canada. This video is a plea for tips from the Canadian television show on Rogers called "GTA's MOST WANTED". The following is text from a previously posted video by Toronto Crime Stoppers featuring the lead homicide investigator from Toronto Police Service Homicide Squad, Detective Sergeant Frank Skubic. On Thanksgiving Day, Monday October 8th 2007,at about 2:20 in the morning, Keegan Allen, affectionately known as SPECKZ was in the audience at the "All Ages 2007 Showdown", a dance competition being held at the Hungarian Cultural Centre on St Clair Ave in Toronto. At that time, and for reasons not yet fully understood a gunman opened fire inside the dance hall. Up to 3 shots were fired. The audience, shocked and horrified, ran to the exits and out onto the street. More shots were fired outside. The police were not far away and arrived very quickly. Keegan was found on the floor, unconscious, with a fatal bullet wound to his head. The killer, managed to escape, inconspicuously in the crowd. This is a tragedy that repeats itself all too often. A callous, bold-blooded, heartless miscreant, with no regard for human life, shoots and kills an innocent person and silences witnesses through fear. We at the Homicide Squad need your help. We cannot solve this, or any other senseless killing without the help of the community. We need witnesses to come forward with the evidence required to bring these killers to justice. As I review various internet sites such as Facebook, I feel your pain, sorrow, and outrage over the senseless killing of Keegan. However, this pales in comparison to the pain and sorrow felt by Keegan's family. The killer has taken away a talented young man, who enjoyed expressing himself through dance, who was a jokester, always with a smile on his face. I appeal to all those in attendance at "Showdown 2007" -- you are all witnesses with a unique perspective of what happened -- My colleagues and I need to hear your story. I know that many of you were videotaping or taking pictures at this event -- that is evidence and I would like to obtain a copy from you. As a witness, you yourself become a victim by your silence. You must have the courage to come forward and participate in the justice process -- do it for yourself, for your community, and for Keegan Allen's family. If you have any issues or concerns, let's talk about them. Call me at 416-808-7399. If you have spoken to anyone with first hand information about what had happened you too are a witness. It is important that we hear from you - if you wish to remain anonymous at this time, you may call Crimestoppers at 222 TIPS (8477) or visit their on-line website at www.222tips.com. When we work together, the whole community becomes stronger and safer. The decent hard working people and students of Toronto attending family events should do so without fear of getting shot and killed. It is time to stand up! It is time to send a strong message to these criminals that you will no longer tolerate this assinine behaviour.
