'Frito-Lay' is an American and international company that markets corn chips, potato chips, and other snack foods. Its headquarters is based on Legacy Drive in Plano, Texas, USA (a suburb of Dallas).
Frito-Lay was the result of the merger of the Fritos Company and Atlanta-based H.W. Lay & Company in 1961. In 1965, a merger of Frito-Lay, Inc. and the Pepsi-Cola Company resulted in the formation of PepsiCo, Inc. It now also owns Tropicana Products, The Quaker Oats Company, and The Smith's Snackfood Company, Gatorade, and various other ventures.
Walkers, a subsidiary of Frito-Lay is the largest snack food manufacturer in the United Kingdom best known for manufacturing crisps.
In the late 1960s, the company employed a series of TV ads featuring the Frito Bandito, an animated Mexican bandit who traveled across the land, stealing Fritos corn chips at gunpoint. Though popular, the ads were pulled in 1971 after threatened legal action by the National Mexican-American Anti-Defamation Committee, who requested the ads be discontinued as they were offensive to Mexican-Americans and other Latinos.

Lawsuits

In 1988 Frito Lay were sued by songwriter Tom Waits. Frito Lay lost the lawsuit and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of California awarded Waits a US$2.6 million judgement in his favor (Waits v. Frito Lay, 978 F. 2d 1093 (9th Cir. 1992)^[1]. Frito Lay had approached Waits to use one of his songs in an advertisement. Waits declined the offer, and Frito Lay hired a Waits soundalike to sing a jingle similar to ''Small Change's "Step Right Up", a cover of a song originally written by Waits."^[2].
