'Forino' is a town (commune) in the
province of Avellino,
Campania,
Italy.
on 8 May of 663 AD this town was the set of a battle between the imperial army of
Constans II and the Lombard army of
Romuald, son of
Grimoald and duke of
Benevento.
The Legend tells St. Michael himself made an apparition in this battle on the side of the Lombards.
After this crushing defeat Constans retired in
Naples and gave up his projects for expelling the Lombards from south Italy.
Other sources tells us the battle took place at
Calore River, where it joins with the river
Volturno .
