![]() | French naval vessel task force visits Shanghai A French naval vessel task force, composed of the amphibious attack ship Mistral and the antisubmarine destroyer Dupleix, steamed slowly into the Huangpu River at noon yesterday to kick off its 6-day friendly visit to Shanghai. Related personnel from a naval base stationed in Shanghai, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipality, and French embassy and consulate in China held a welcoming ceremony at the military port in Wusong. During the visit to Shanghai, the officers and men of the French naval vessel task force will go on sightseeing in the city, and visit China-made guided missile frigates. Also, the Chinese and French officers and men will hold friendly soccer match and tug-of-war competition. After the visit, the navies of the two countries will hold a joint exercise in a sea area in the East China Sea on April 21. What is worth mentioning here is that the visiting amphibious attack ship Mistral is the first among the French Navy's new generation of multifunction amphibious helicopter attack ships, which was commissioned in January 2006. It can be used to carry out both military missions and humanitarian rescue operations. With a displacement of 21,000 tons, the ship is 200m long with a take-off deck of 5,200 square meters. It can accommodate six helicopters to take off or land at the same time. In addition to a crew cabin that can accommodate the complement of 160 sailors, it also has a cabin area to accommodate 450 fully equipped marines. |
