The 'Figure-of-eight follow through loop' is a type of
knot. This knot is identical to the
Figure-of-eight loop except for the method of tying. It is tied this way when the knot must be tied around an object cannot easily have a loop slipped over it. In particular, it is used to attach a
rope to a
climbing harness.
The
double bowline accomplishes the same task, can be tied faster, and does not jam. However, the double bowline has closely related knots that can
capsize, so many climbers prefer the figure-of-eight as it is less likely to be mistied. In addition, like many variants of the
Figure-of-eight knot, it can be easily visually inspected.
To tie the figure-eight follow through, tie a figure eight in the end of the rope, making sure to have enough rope on the running end for the loop and the remainder of the knot. Slip the end of the rope through the harness or around the object, then follow the running end back through the knot, paralleling itself so that it ends up next to the standing end.
