FARRAGUT STATE PARK

'Farragut State Park' is a state park in the state of Idaho. The 4000 acre (16 km²) park is located on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains, the northwest most range of the Bitterroot Mountains. The park is the original main training base of the U.S. Navy for the training of naval sailers bound for the Pacific theater in WWII.

Geography

The park adjoins Lake Pend Oreille where the Navy maintains a submarine base to this day. The Park was transferred to the state of Idaho by the US Navy, after the Farragut Navy Training Base was closed following World War II.
According to those who work at the Camp Brig Museum, there was never any submarine testing done at the training base.
Over 200,000 were trained at the training base. It was also used as a POW Camp.

History

The park hosted the 1965 National Girl Scout Senior Roundup, 12th World Scout Jamboree in 1967, and the 1969 and 1973 National Scout Jamboree of the Boy Scouts of America. The park still serves as the winter training "Klondyke" site for the scout troops of the Inland Northwest Council.
