 | South Korean Students Face Future Test CHAN: If you remember what it was like to do an important exam, this might bring back some memories. South Korean students are sitting for nationwide tests that will determine their future careers. STORY: It's everything or bust: parents and students alike are anxious as South Korea's nation-wide college entrance exam begins. This is no minor exam; the state-sponsored College Scholastic Aptitude Test is the most important assessment for students. Acing the exam is considered a key to success for South Koreans - in other words, they not only determine career paths but even marriage partners. Graduates of elite universities are much sought after by top Korean companies and later for marriage. Across the country dozens of students sing, dance, chant slogans and gave out coffee for senior classmates as they arrive to take the exams. But some parents are not so cheerful. [Mother of Student Sitting for Exam]: "She called me -- she said she had left the admission ticket for the exam at home, she took everything except the most important thing!" Days before the test, mothers just like this one crowded at Buddhist temples and churches around the country, to pray for their child's success at the exam. [Kang Min-soo, Mother]: "I am clinging to our Buddha. I am praying that my daughter will be good and healthy and enter the college she wants to go to." [Illeana, Mother]: "My daughter studied hard to be well prepared. But anybody can be irritated or anxious at the exams, so I pray that she can take the exam at her ease." But it takes more than praying to make it through, since competition for university entrance is intense. This year some 600,000 students will take the test, but only half of them will make it to university. |
