 | Austrian Swing - Ernst Landl: TANZ MIT MIR (1944) "Tanz mit mir" (i. e. "Dance with me") by Ernst Landl mit seinen Solisten. In March 1944 the Austrian section of the Deutsche Telefunken cut 7 sides in Vienna with some of the best Austrian swing musicians, including Ernst Landl (p, vibraphone), Rudy Kregcyck (cl, ts), Herbert Mytteis (violin), Vittorio Ducchini (g), Otto Simon (bass), Arthur Motta (dr). At a time when Austria was part of an almost perished "Third Reich", a hot recording like this one had little chances to get released. Landl and his men played the very music which was deemed as the "decadent" sounds of Germany's then adversaries, particularly the USA. Hence, only the two weakest of the 7 were approved for public sale (Telefunken A 10538 with female singer Gretl Rath: Eines Schönen Tages / Seit Ich Dich Kenne). The remaining 5 were rejected. They survived in a very few test pressings only, and so did this one. Mx No. is 35037 (March 27, 1944) Ernst Landl (1914 - 1983) was a well-trained pianist, composer and arranger. In the early 1930s he began playing with the Bobby Sax (i. e. Robert Sachs) Orchestra. Later he played with Eddie Brunner, Stephane Grapelly and Horst Winter. After WWII, he founded the "Hot Club Vienna", a fine swing combo with Hans Koller on tenorsax. One of his best remembered own compositions is "Nesty Boogie" (1947, Elite Special ES 8120). In the mid-1950s he quit the music business and moved to Sweden, where he died on Dec 4, 1983. |
