History
Epping station was opened by the Great Eastern Railway on 24 April 1865. Central Line trains first served the station on 25 September 1949.
It formerly served as the transfer station for the single track line to Ongar, which closed on 30 September 1994. For the purposes of fare charging, it is in Zone 6.
The station today
Epping is situated 16.4 miles (26.4 km) north-north east of Charing Cross.
Two lines can be seen continuing on beyond Epping station. One of these (from platform 1) was used to serve the Ongar branch as mentioned above, while the other was a once-used siding that runs on for a few hundred yards beyond Epping station. The siding is still used for stabling of engineering trains during track works and similar purposes.
