The name

The municipality is named after Eidfjorden (Norse ''Eiðafjörðr''). The first element is the genitive case of the name of the farm ''Eiðar'', the old churchsite. The name of the farm is the plural form of ''eið'' n 'land between to waters' (here the fjord and the lake of Eidfjordvatnet).

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1984). It shows the antlers of a reindeer.
