![]() | The Ignored Growing Economic Inequality part 2 KATHERINE NEWMAN Consumer debt Is absolutely catastrophic and we're going to see bankruptcy skyrocket in part because of the bills that the republican congress passed that provided bankruptcy—stripped bankruptcy protection for precisely for the people we're talking about here. The biggest source of bankruptcy is medical expenditures, people who are unable to pay for that appendix to come out, or their elderly parents care. They're loading up credit cards with medical care expenditures. Our medical care system clearly is out of control, and without addressing the fundamental reform, we're going to see a lot more Americans, especially those in the near poor, pushed into bankruptcy. AMY GOODMAN We did not hear much about health care last night. KATHERINE NEWMAN No, we did not. And like I said before, the S-CHIP bill would have been the most progressive thing that could've been done for the missing class in terms of health care. But I think the reason we didn't hear about it is that Bush does not want to talk about what he has permitted to happen under his reign and it is going to be left to the next president or the next congress to deal with. I actually do believe we are going to see some action moving us towards a more universal health care system because the business community is unable to fund it and we're seeing these huge rises in the uninsured. And it's sucking a huge amount of money out of the economy, rising health care costs, almost as bad as the gasoline costs. So I do believe we will see action on that but not in this Presidency, not in this Congress. one reason for the credit crisis is in fact low wages. Easy credit in recent years has been a substitute for decent wages. And that's quite a trap. You're not going to be able to save up and buy that house, but boy, do we have a mortgage for you—ha ha. You know, that's the sort of thing that has been going on. If we do not address the fundamental problem of so many working people in poverty, we're going to continue to have a weak economy. There are so many things we could do and I'd like to hear more democrats talking about. And that is let's return to a progressive income tax system. We're certainly not making Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, but try to get really progressive again as we used to be and just repairing that safety net so that people can take a hit now and then like a job loss and get back on their feet. We do not have that. AMY GOODMAN I recently just heard John Edwards saying if he were not in the race, he doubts the word "poverty" would be raised again. Do you share that assessment Katherine Newman? KATHERINE NEWMAN I absolutely share that assessment. As far as I'm concerned he's the only candidate who has made the issue of poverty central. And this is why I am a supporter of his from the very beginning. he understands theses structural inequalities are not going to go away unless we attack the problem of poverty. Which is something we did whole heartedly during the Johnson years and we came back to it in many ways in the years that followed, but it is almost as though the poor do not exist. If we put together the poor, the 37 million poor people in the US with the over 50 million who are near poor, we're talking about almost one-third of the American population. What are the democrats going to do for them? I think the meltdown in the economy has frightened everyone to the point where we are thinking only about the middle class. While the middle class is important, this huge population, 90 million people, over 30% of the nation's children, deserve some attention. John Edwards was attempting to give it to them and still is. |
![]() | Black Apartheid in South Africa This video shows how the black activists and leaders misled their people during the anti-apartheid struggle, promising them liberation from poverty. The truth is that they merely manipulated the masses, mobilizing them to provide their leaders with an easy ticket to power and riches. The numerical supremacy of black people meant easy victory through mere "head counting" rather than the true spirit of democracy, that relies on effective opposition to provide successful government. Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) reaches much further than the affirmative action programmes in other countries. It sets quotas for black ownership of companies across all economic sectors in South Africa. Since the ANC assumed government in 1994, a loss of skills and experience on a massive scale in the public sectors (electricity supply, health care, water & sewage management etc.) combined with huge salaries and bonuses awarded to managers who were appointed based on race, rather than qualifications and experience, has resulted in extreme inefficiency and disruption. So far, the large influx of foreign investment capital since 1994 has allowed the country to absorb this squandering of resources while still maintaining economic growth. However, this video shows the growing resentment against the ANC government for their inability to translate South Africa's economic growth to job creation on a large enough scale, to combat widespread poverty effectively. The ANC has made the mistake of empowering from the top down. They demonstrate a monumental lack of ability to prioritise, spending millions on celebrations, fighter jets, change of street and city names - failing to address the issues closest to people's hearts: unemployment, violent crime and AIDS. Few feel safe in their own homes, and those who can afford it, transform their homes to virtual prisons to try and protect their families. This is not real freedom. The new, "Black Apartheid" is a far cry from the "non-racial" South Africa promised by the ANC in the lead-up to the 1994 democratic elections. The government's reckless implementation of the affirmative-action policy is forcing many white people to leave the country, creating a skills shortage crisis, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said on Thursday. "We need to grant white South Africans a meaningful stake in the existing order ... not only does this make economic sense, it is also in line with our vision of a non-racial South Africa of the struggle days," he said. The reason a majority of white people supported the then-National Party's referendum calling for an end to apartheid rule was because they believed they would have a place in the new South Africa, said Buthelezi. "If the majority of white South Africans had envisaged in the early 1990s the way affirmative action and racial classification would come to dominate the post-apartheid labour market, few would have voted 'Yes' in Mr [FW] de Klerk's watershed referendum on constitutional reform," he said. |
![]() | RON PAUL Interview on economics - part 1 http://www.freeme.tv The new world order dismantling of the US Constitution is financed by the central banks of the world, and the world's largest corporations, multinational giants that have no particularly loyalty to any country, and are loyal only to the practise of accumulating profit. These corporations give their chosen and placed senators and congressmen in both the Democratic and Republican parties millions of dollars for their election campaigns. These senators and congressmen are the most radical and dangerous this country has ever had. They do everything they can to pass laws and regulations prohibited by our constitution, laws designed to destroy the independence and freedoms of the United States, to eliminate the rights of the citizens, and to convert the United States into a ruthless, persecuting tyranny. They lie constantly to deceive the people so they will go along with the laws and regulations they want to pass. Everyone in high positions in the government takes a solemn oath to uphold and obey the Constitution, but nearly all of them totally ignore the Constitution. The president issues executive orders that are totally unconstitutional, and Congress passes laws that the Constitution specifically forbids. Our God-given Constitution is the reason the United States has become the greatest country in the world, but it is being thoroughly undermined today by the Jesuits and neocons in government as they work to destroy the United States. The laws and regulations they pass are designed to export the industrial and manufacturing base of the United States to other countries. They are designed to destroy our energy base by restricting oil prospecting, fuel production, and nuclear power plants. The new world order traitors in the House, Senate, and regulating agencies, restrict the private use of land with nonsensical environmental rules and regulations. They pass laws and regulations about what is "proper" to be taught in schools so that children will grow up being extremely ignorant under the banner of being educated. They continually pass laws that restrict the liberty of the citizens of the country. They continually pass laws to regulate every aspect of life in the United States. They continually pass laws that restrict freedom of speech such as the Campaign Finance Reform Act. Incidentally, they always use names for these laws, like this one that will sound good to the American people (and the Domestic Security Enhancement Act, or "Patriot" Act ), but rarely indicate what is actually in the law. They use every means they can to deceive the people. They continually try to pass restrictive gun legislation. The second amendment to the Constitution says, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Every gun law that congress has ever passed is a direct violation of the United States' Constitution. Because of the crime and terrorism in our country today, and because of the government and media propaganda against guns, people are made to believe that these laws are necessary. Those who resist the corrupt state are treated as enemies, but the enemy is the state. I cannot stand up for my government which tortures, imprisons without charges, and criminalizes its citizens. The time has come to refuse allegiance to and resist the government. Its tyranny and incompetence have become unendurable. The American people cannot continue on the present path forged by the transnational economic elite and their representatives. They all must be removed. It is imperative that this political machine that is organizing torture, repression, thievery, and an all out attack on civil liberties must be deposed. You can either join the fight, or you can accept that the Federal Government now has the right to arrest you, seize all your property, and kill you, without trial, or due process, all on the orders of the authorities. |

John Russell's Endorsement of Senator John Edwards' Democrat for President in 2008 as published on Kos. John Russell Makes Case For and Endorses John Edwards for President in 2008 by John Russell Fl 5 [Subscribe] [Edit Diary] Thu Dec 28, 2006 at 12:38:11 PM PDT Dear Friends: Today, December 28th 2006 John Edwards formally announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the office of President of the United States. He had been working to help the people of New Orleans many of whom remain dramatically impacted by the effects of Hurricane Katrina... Now a distant memory for most Americans... It is with great enthusiasm that I write you today asking you to join me in endorsing the candidacy of Senator John Edwards, in the 2008 race for the Democratic Presidential nomination. John Russell Fl 5's diary :: :: In a world ravaged by chaos, respect for America as the great beacon of light from which sound judgment and leadership are the norm, rather than the exception must be restored. John Edwards is the one individual in my opinion who will restore objective positive consideration and judgment to our nations highest office. John Edwards has expressed his opinions and taken action on behalf of the major issues of the day including his admission of regret regarding his vote for the war in Iraq. I am confident that he will demonstrate the courage to place action behind his words in beginning to take the steps necessary to move American forces out of Iraq as he said in his announcement this morning. I heard John Edwards not only this morning, but in the past, point his favor toward a universal health care system covering all Americans, as well as investments in alternative energy to break our nations dependence on fossil fuels. John Edwards has spoken of two Americas... one that represents those individuals who live in the very top tier and in contrast to the huddled masses who live in an ever-growing bottom tier. The middle class is shrinking. John Edwards offers answers to the growing economic chasm that gives rise to this "Two Americas" problem. Restoring "progressivity" to a Federal Tax policy that is now essentially flat as a result of the Bush tax cuts (disproportionately benefiting the top 1% of income earners), is mandatory if America is to stave off further declines in the ranks of the middle class. It is my considered opinion that the former Senator from North Carolina is the only candidate with the political courage to carry out what needs to be done in order to accomplish this necessary goal. America is not in a good place in so many ways today as I write this message. In this historic time America and the world are in need of a person of great character and judgment in this most important of positions; A person who will place a steady hand on the helm of this great country who can and will motivate and work with other capable people to lead the world out of this tumultuous storm of turmoil in which it finds itself. Lets work together to put John Edwards in White House in January of 2009. Let's work together to help John Edwards realize his dream of achieving "One America". Thank you for your attention. But added to that, the people of Mindanao face the ongoing struggle of the Bangsamoro to fight and advocate for self-determination, sovereignty, and rights to ancestral lands. As the Philippines has been declared the 2nd Front in Bush Jr.'s so called "War on Terror", Mindanao and its people face continuous hardships, exploitation, human rights violations, and oppression perpetrated by the U.S. backed-Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Regime. To combat this Christianized Filipinos, Indigenous Katutubu, and Islamized Moros have banded together to challenge and question the practices of the Government Republic of the Philippines. Militantly and morally the masses mobilize to change the oppressive conditions of the motherland. Suara Bangsamoro (Voice of the Moro People) is a party list representing the Moro innhabitants of the country. The Suara Bangsamoro Party aims to uphold the Moro people's right to self-determination, promote a politics of self-reliance, bring about a "progressive and healthy interaction" between the Moro and Filipino peoples, forge a just peace not only in Mindanao but throughout the Philippines, embark on a policy of "genuine industrialization and land reform" as the path toward eradicating the Moro people's poverty; create international solidarity against foreign aggression, domination, exploitation, and oppression; and protect the Moro people and their homeland. One of the main reasons for the founding of the political party is the desire for Moro people to have legitimate representation in the country's political life. The group is headed by National Deputy Secretary-General Zaynab Ampatuan, who is also one of the party list's nominees for this year's elections. |
![]() | Black Empowerment plunges SA in darkness Political correctness gone mad. The collapse of South Africa's electricity supplier, ESKOM, has finally alerted the world to the fact that affirmative action and black economic empowerment (BEE) has gone mad in South Africa. This policy of reverse racism also contributed to the collapse of the police and health care systems, contributing to the highest crime rate in the world (55 homicides per 100, 000 population) making it impossible for the average South African to feel safe, even at home, behind gates and burglar bars. BEE reaches much further than the affirmative action programmes in other countries. It sets quotas for black ownership of companies across all economic sectors in South Africa. Black ownership of 25% - 50% is enforced upon medium and large companies. Similar laws apply for the following: Management (50.1%), Employment equity (40% - 70%), Preferential Procurement (50%). Businesses have been closed down already for not complying. Not only in ESKOM, but also in health care, police and education departments, whites are barred from advancement, regardless of qualifications or experience. Even the president's brother, the businessman Moeletsi Mbeki, says the current brand of BEE is really a political rather than an economic strategy that is enriching an elite of black businessmen close to the government. Duma Gqubule, an economist who has studied BEE, says that in the 10 years since BEE's creation, GDP per capita has dropped to the levels of 30 years ago and unemployment has doubled to eight million. Instead of using this type of policy, it has been suggested by critics that a policy of qualification equality should be used. This would allow businesses to focus on employing the person with the highest qualifications, the most experience and the best recommendations. To allow previously disadvantaged individuals to achieve these qualifications and experience, critics of BEE say that the government should place more emphasis on secondary and tertiary education, as well as subsidise companies wishing to employ entry level applicants. Pedroza declared in interview that the decision of a group of activists to march again does not reflect the feelings of the community. Chicago.- Common Leaders assured that the majority of Mexican immigrants of this city rejects the execution of a massive march the next May 1 in demand of immigration reform. "The people consider that there aren't any conditions for immigration legislation, for which to pressure with a march will only bring the increment of raids and deportations", affirmed the president of the Chamber of Commerce of The Villita, Salvador Pedroza. Also the counselor of the Institute of the Mexicans Abroad (IME), said in interview that the decision of a group of activists to march again does not reflect the feelings of the community. "The leaders cannot feel the same things of the undocumented, because they already documents and even citizenship. They do not know that is the fear of a possible separation of their family by immigration agents", he added. In the meantime, Cuauhtémoc Morfin, common leader of the mexican neighborhood Pilsen and counselor of the IME, expressed that the marches already fullfiled their objective and another march runs the risk of becoming a failure. "The first march showed that we are united, the second was prompted by the aggresive operation in The Villita two weeks before, but the third one could be counterproductive", he added. The activist assured that the inhabitants of Pilsen have said that they do not want another march, "they believe that alone will bring more injustice against them, because the authorities do not like that type of protests in the street". With respect to the assembly of the March 10 Movement, the international boycott against the business Kimberly Clark, both leaders said that if its not well organized, it would also result in a failure. "A boycott requires an extensive structure to organize and above all economic resources which we don't have", notified Pedroza. The opinion of the two common representatives, the best form to continue pushing for immigration reform is through a common plan, formed by several strategies to be develop in different fronts. As an example, Morfin mentioned to continue informing the community of their rights; to enlarge the number of immigrants that become citizens and voters; as well as to know and to pressure their federal and state representatives. |

I made this video and showed it to all my classmates at the English class. On September 11, 1973, Pinochet, who had recently been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army, led a coup d'état against Socialist President Salvador Allende and, along with the Navy, Air Force and Carabineros, established a military government. Pinochet implemented a series of military operations in which approximately 3,000 people were killed, while 27,000 were incarcerated without trials and subjected to torture. Thousands more fled in exile, in particular to Argentina, as well as Peru and applied as political refugees; however, they were followed in their exile by the DINA secret police, in the frame of Operation Condor which linked South American dictatorships together against political opponents. Pinochet was a well-known human rights violator and violent dictator. Chile has a dynamic market-oriented economy characterized by a high level of foreign trade. His Democratic rival, Barack Obama, wrote in his campaign memoir of the country's need to, "modernize and rebuild the social contract that FDR first stitched together in the middle of the last century." Change in the areas of social and economic policy would appear likely with the advent of a new presidential administration. However, neither candidate is proposing tax reform anywhere near as sweeping or bold. The panel will discuss what might be done to adapt the tax code to the fundamental changes brought on by a globalized, high-tech economy as well as the opportunity that a reevaluation of fiscal policy offers to align revenues with the evolving rights and responsibilities that people assign to government, individuals, business and civil society. Finally, it will offer a historical perspective on previous efforts in this regard and prospects for reform in 2009 and beyond. |
