First anniversary of Eastern Liberation
Freedom rays dawned to the East on July 19th 2007 due to the priceless services of the gallant soldiers who embarked on a humanitarian operation. The soldiers undertook this effort at a time when the Eastern polity under the grip of the brutal LTTE terrorists for more than two decades, were yearning for rays of freedom. One year has been completed following the Eastern liberation. The LTTE terrorists prepared their blue prints in the East, dreaming of an Eelam State, after being nurtured by the ceasefire inked with the UNP. The tiger terrorists shut down the Mawilaru Anicut on 21st July 2006 obstructing the flow of water to the civilians. They thus displayed to the world their brutalism. Humanitarian operations got underway on July 26th 2006 marking the beginning of shattering the Eelam dream. The security forces, after liberating the Mawilaru sluice gate on August 8th captured Sampur in Trincomalee and thereafter claimed victory in Thoppigala on 3rd July 2007. The government was entrusted the task of rebuilding the East, after the total liberation of the East, routing the LTTE terrorists, who claimed that they cannot be vanquished. It was President Rajapakse who undertook the uphill task of reawakening the Eastern polity. De-mining commenced thereafter and also the removal of booby traps. The civilians, who lived in the dark received power, while roads were constructed. The Government commenced the difficult operation of uplifting infrastructure including schools and hospitals. A new era dawned for the East with the supervision and courage of Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapakse and the entire Government. The Eastern civilians also enjoyed universal franchise to elect their Provincial representatives after 20 years, as the Government opened the doors to enthrone democracy in the region sans restricting it to development. The Eastern civilians received the opportunity of expressing their preferences visiting the pooling booths peacefully in the Provincial elections staged on 10th May this year. Reports of local and international election monitors bared that it will go down in history as the most free and fair poll ever to be held in Sri Lanka. Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan took oaths before the President on 16th May as the Eastern Chief Minister, placing full confidence in elections, giving up the bullet which he considered as his life. July 19th is a day which has left an indelible mark in Sri Lanka's history which brought rays of peace to the Eastern civilians. Sri Lanka's independence was commemorated with pride at the Independence Square in Colombo under the patronage of the President, on the day the Easterns saw rays of freedom. The Mega programme to carry forward the country enjoying the benefits of development is continuing relentlessly.

Bavarian Forest, European Green Belt
In Bavaria, in south-eastern Germany, the country's first national park was founded in 1970. In 1997, its total surface area was extended to now 243 square kilometers. Together with the Šumava National Park (Bohemian Forest), located on its eastern flank, the Bavarian Forest National Park represents central Europe's largest protected closed woodland area. One of the most important political barriers to affect Europe in the second half of the twentieth century was the Iron Curtain, which ran for approximately 6800 km from the northern most tip of Scandinavia, through Central Europe and into the countries of South Eastern Europe, spanning some of the continent's most impressive and fragile landscapes. The Iron Curtain was developed most strongly on the Eastern side of the barrier and created a 'forbidden zone' where no activity was allowed. On the Western side however, close to the border economic development was restricted by the lack of infrastructure. The only positive result of this separation was that nature was given a 40 year respite from the intensive agricultural and development practices that were happening almost everywhere else. Now this border region contains many of Europe's endangered species and important habitats and has been named as the 'European Green Belt'. It is also a region that is extremely important for the livelihoods of many rural communities. The Green Belt then includes the Baltic Sea coast, which is rich in valuable habitats and is a very important region for migrating birds. In Germany, it passes through the area where the Iron Curtain was most obviously enforced, and where the strip of land where human movement was prohibited, it is still clearly visible in the surrounding landscapes Further south at the heart of the Green Belt are found the neighbouring regions of Sumava National Park (Czech Republic) and the Bavarian Forest National Park (Germany), which are predominantly forested and home to the European lynx. G. D. Dhurrkay Memorial 2007 | Ski Beach, Gove Peninsula
This is the 2nd Memorial Ceremony in commemoration of the late G. D. Dhurrkay, held at Gunyangara' (Ski Beach) in the Gove Peninsula region of eastern Arnhem Land. Amongst other things, Mr Dhurrkay was an outstanding athlete and the first Yolngu man to make it to the AFL, a popular football code of which the AFL represents the highest level of professional competition in Australia. During his AFL career, 'Dhurrks' played for the Kangaroos in Melbourne, and the Fremantle Dockers in Perth. He also played for the Wanderers in Darwin during his NTFL days. Mr Dhurrkay was a ground-breaker in other ways, in particular, his contribution to community development and his service to the wider Miwatj region and beyond. He played critical roles as an employee of various community and government organisations and departments and is remembered for his infectious enthusiasm, commitment to social justice, and his dedication to improving the lives of his people. He was an emerging leader who took it upon himself to addressing the many social issues plaguing remote Aboriginal communities. A dear friend to many whose lives were touched by his spirit, Dhurrk's funeral 2 years ago was probably the most-well attended of any in Arnhem Land within living memory. The primary theme in this Memorial Ceremony is the raising of the flag (Dhomala). The previous year's flags for the Wanderers, Kangaroos, and Fremantle football clubs were taken down and replaced with new ones. In Wangurri, Gumatj, Dhalwangu and Warramiri ceremony, flag raising symbolises the departure of a family member. On another level, it speaks of and commemorates the Manggatharra (Macassan and other SE Asian) people who made annual visits to the shores of northern Australia well before the English, Dutch and other colonial powers navigated its coastline. The Manggatharra came with the Lunggurrma northern winds to collect Dharripa (trepang or sea-slug) and developed amicable trade and social relations with the Yolngu and other coastal peoples, over the course of centuries. The trepang were gathered with Yolngu assistance and food, water and shelter was also provided to their Asian guests. In return, the Manggatharra reciprocated with items previously unknown to Yolngu including tobacco, alcohol, cloth, knives, and other foreign goods which not only entered the local economy, but became incorporated into Yolngu cosmology as well. In preparing for their return voyage on the Djalathang southern winds, the Manggatharra would raise the flags of their ships to announce their journey home. In this way, flag raising in Yolngu ceremony symbolises the passing away of a Yirritja clansperson, the departure of the spirit back to its totemic home, to its original source. In this Memorial Ceremony for G. D. Dhurrkay, Wangurri clansman Malalakpuy Munyarryun, a brother of Dhurrks, sings whilst Dhurrk's uncle Djalu Gurruwiwi plays the yirdaki (didgeridoo). The placement of this video clip on YouTube has the permission of Djalu Gurruwiwi, so that the memory of his nephew will remain with us for all time.

Moving post card The London boroughs that make up this informal area are Barking & Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. The total area of this group of boroughs is 318.64 km² and the total population in 2004 was 1.5 million. East London sub regionThe East London sub region of the London Plan additionally includes the City of London which would otherwise be included in Central London, excludes Waltham Forest, but includes the boroughs of Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham which are south of the river and often considered to be either South or South East London. This sub region, the largest in London, contains all of the Thames Gateway redevelopment zone that is in London, on both sides of the Thames within a single sub region. Other organisations including the Learning and Skills Council, the related London East Connexions Partnership and the London Development Agency also use this definition. The sub region had a population in 2001 of 1.9 million. [edit] Present and future East London is today an area of regeneration, with a rising population. The redevelopment of the Docklands area began in the early 1980s, and the Thames Gateway project is now extending regeneration further east, with the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation responsible for planning and delivery of the project in East London. London's successful bid to host the 2012 Olympics has kick-started regeneration programmes in the area, and is likely to have an impact on house prices. This has been evidenced in August 2005 where East London was one of only three places in England and Wales to have increases in property prices. [1] [edit] Transport East London has seen considerable improvement with transport in recent years and is the focus for further development over the years leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games and beyond. The A12 and A13 trunk roads have been considerably upgraded and the Docklands Light Railway and Jubilee Line Extension constructed. A new extension to the Docklands Light Railway to connect with London City Airport opened in December 2005 while work on an extension under the Thames to connect with Woolwich has already started. Further DLR projects include an extension to Barking Reach and Dagenham Dock, and a direct route, via West Ham, from Royal Victoria to Stratford to connect with Stratford International station on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link; itself currently under construction at the heart of Stratford City. Existing transport infrastructure already includes a large network of suburban National Rail routes operated by 'one' and c2c, and the London Underground services of the Central Line and District Line. Transport for London are currently developing an East London Transit scheme for the area and an east-west rail route known as Crossrail is also planned to serve several stations in East London. [edit] History The oldest parts of East London are Tower Hamlets and Hackney. These areas, originally in Middlesex officially became part of London with the creation of the County of London in 1888. The eastern limit of London at this time became the River Lea which was the traditional boundary between Middlesex and Essex. Because the strict planning laws of London were not in force on the eastern side of the river the area began to industrialise quickly in places such as Canning Town and Silvertown, now in the borough of Newham. This area became known as 'London over the Border'. In 1965 the boroughs of Newham, Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham and Havering were incorporated into Greater London. As a legacy of not being in the original County of London, Newham receives less funding, than for example Tower Hamlets, and is campaigning to be officially recognised as an Inner London borough. [edit] Alternative names [edit] East End East London is sometimes erroneously considered interchangeable with the East End of London; however, the traditional East End is a comparatively small area, covering only the innermost (western) parts of East London, centred on Tower Hamlets and part of Hackney, immediately adjacent to the ancient eastern boundary of the City of London. [edit] North East London As no part of London south of the River Thames is considered to be part of East London, North East London would strictly be a more accurate description of the area, and this name is sometimes used to refer to it. For example, there is a North East London strategic health authority and a North East London Assembly constituency (which also covers Islington). The rest of East London is covered by City and East which includes Barking and Dagenham, Newham and Tower Hamlets while Havering and Redbridge form a constituency.
