DUCHY OF LUCCA
The 'Duchy of Lucca' was an Italian state existing from 1815 to 1847.
Centred at Lucca, the Duchy was formed out of the former Republic of Lucca and the Principality of Lucca, ruled by Elisa Bonaparte, in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna to compensate the House of Bourbon for their loss of the Duchy of Parma, which at that time was ruled by Marie Louise of Austria.
In 1817, Maria Louisa, the former Queen of Etruria and the mother of Charles Louis, the Bourbon heir to Parma, assumed the government of Lucca, after the Treaty of Paris had confirmed her status as a Queen governing in in her own right and her son's right to succeed to the Duchy of Parma after the death of Marie Louise of Austria.
After Maria Louisa's death in 1824, Charles Louis assumed the government of the Duchy.
In 1847 Marie Louise of Austria died and Charles succeded to the Duchy of Parma, while Lucca was annexed by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
