Introduction
Dr. Jaymant Mishra is a renowned
Maithili poet in India. He was awarded
Sahitya Akademi Award in 1995. His major literary contributions were Kavita Kusumanjali - a compilation of Maithili poems and Mahakavi Vidyapati - a commentary of the legendary Maithili poet . He has also been one of the prominent academicians of the
Bihar province of India. He served as the Vice Chancellor of
Mithila University for three years (1989-1992). His closeness to the former chief minister of Bihar Prof. Jagannath Mishra allowed him to wield a wide ranging influence on the education system in the state of Bihar in late 80s and early 90s. The end of his era also marked the collapse of the state education system. Despite his undisputed brilliance as a poet and literary figure, his record as an educator and academician has been a target of many critics.
Though famous as a Maithili poet, he is also a prolific writer in
Sanskrit and
Hindi. Most of his literary works have a satirical literary tone which he uses to ridicule human vice and weakness - both on an individual and social level. His works surprise the readers with his progressive views despite the fact that his era was one of the darkest ages of parochialism and denominationalism.
