Scratch (trailer)
A feature-length documentary film about hip-hop DJing, otherwise known as turntablism. From the South Bronx in the 1970's to San Francisco now, the world's best scratchers, beat-diggers, party-rockers, and producers wax poetic on beats, breaks, battles, and the infinite possibilities of vinyl. Scratch starts with an origin story. Grand Wizard Theodore (the "Thomas Edison of the movement") recalls the day, way back in 1975, when his grandmother told him to turn down the music he was making in front of his Bronx River Houses apartment. In order to hear her, he put his hand on the turntable, holding the record in place. As he moved his hand, slightly, a new sound rose up. And so, he smiles, scratching was born. Brilliant documentary by Doug Pray http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0143861/ Released in 2001. Now on DVD. Just wanted a copy of the trailer on Youtube :)
Doug Lang : Cup Of Kindness
My newest song, based loosely around Robert Burns' song, Auld Lang Syne, which I quote from in mid-song. I was remembering Bogun Mazappa, our band's manager and fiddler for a while. Also, many years ago there was someone in my neighbourhood who'd play solo violin late at night. This video is a first run-through, mistakes left in... CUP OF KINDNESS Late at night a violin from somewhere down the street Is scratching out a fractured Auld Lang Syne Reminds me of old Bogun doing Bonapartes Retreat That night we all surrendered to the wine He nursed it sad, that melody, played it slow and long Theres magic in a lonely violin Tonight its Robbie Burns, that auld acquaintance song I feel the ancient mem'ry rise again The seas are wide between us now, but I do not forget That somewhere in the world there waits a cup of kindness yet Who might be the restless one who draws that resind bow A student or some old man playin blind? Now hes taken to another, it's the ghost of Jackaroe The one who went a-sailin out with trouble on his mind Bless the tattered melodies that make us beg for time To live until our wishes come ashore The racket of the world hushed by the shadow of a rhyme And music be the fitting end to war The seas are wide between us all, but I do not forget That somewhere in the world there waits a cup of kindness yet "And theres a hand my trusty friend And give us a hand o thine And well take a right goodwill draught For auld lang syne For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne Well take a cup o kindness yet For the sake of auld lang syne" (quoting Burns) Late at night a violin from somewhere down the street Is scratchin out a broken Auld Lang Syne And Jackaroe is dancin now to Bonapartes Retreat Hes run the slopes and gathered daisies fine An ounce of joy has found us now, return the ancient tune Theres magic in a lonely violin Heres to songs and better days and soldier be home soon And to the peace were here to welcome in For the seas are wide between us, but we do not forget That somewhere in the world there waits a cup of kindness yet Deep inside our hearts there waits a cup of kindness yet DL
