DISCOVERY WORLD
(Redirected from Discovery World Museum)
'Discovery World' is a museum located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at 500 N. Harbor Drive. When the museum moved to Milwaukee's lakefront in 2006, the museum changed its full name to 'Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin'. The building was still undergoing construction in March 2007. It formerly was located at 815 N. James Lovell Street.
It currently focuses on innovation and technology, as well as Great Lakes education and conservation. Its brand new building is filled with interactive exhibits, theaters, the Reiman Family Aquarium and Wisconsin's official flagship, the ''Denis Sullivan'', a fully-functional sailing vessel modeled after a 19th century Great Lakes schooner.
The museum is run by Discovery World, Ltd. which was formed after a merger with Pier Wisconsin, Ltd.
Pier Wisconsin was sued in 2007 by a sailor who got injured while working aboard the sailing vessel ''Denis Sullivan''. Pier Wisconsin settled out of court. The United States Coast Guard investigated Pier Wisconsin for claiming in the lawsuit to have filed the proper documents required for an accident aboard an inspected vessel. Freedom of information act searches turned up no evidence of the proper investigation or reporting of the accident. When Coast Guard investigators sought the logbook for the year 2003, Pier Wisconsin claimed to have lost it in the move to their new facility known as Discovery World. Marine Superintendent John Lorenz resigned soon after the investigation began in June of 2007. Lorenz was captain of the ''Denis Sullivan'' when the accident occurred September 17th 2003. Discovery world continues to operate the replica 19th century Great Lakes Schooner ''Denis Sullivan''.
Sailors who are on call to a vessel are supposed to be covered under the Jones Act. Similar to state workers compensation law, the Jones act requires an employer to pay maintenance and cure to the injured sailor. Anyone who works aboard ''Denis Sullivan'' should have their own insurance as Discovery world has proved that even a lawsuit in federal court does not result in Jones Act rights recognized or honored.
Discovery World is backed by the most powerful and wealthy men in the state of Wisconsin. Namely Michael Cudahy. Any sailor unfortunate enough to be injured while on call to ''Denis Sullivan'' will find that Discovery world has all the maritime lawyers in the region on retainer and therefore the injured sailor will not have access to the law. Any sailor injured while on call to ''Denis Sullivan'' is advised to leave the vessel as soon as possible and seek medical care from a doctor they trust and call 1-800-O'Bryans to obtain legal council. The O'Bryan law firm is located in Michigan.
