Derby North constituency roughly covers the northern part of the city of Derby. It was a Labour seat for nearly fifty years until the Conservatives gained it in their landslide victory in 1983. They held it for fourteen years until Labour regained the seat in their landslide year in 1997, 2001 and more recently in 2005 against a strong Conservative challenge.
In January 2007 the constituency boundaries changed significantly and this alters the political balance offering all three main parties a realistic opportunity of successfully returning an Member of Parliament.
