Geologic Journey - Dr. Michael Melchin
Dr. Michael Melchin St. Francis Xavier University Dr. Melchin specializes in the areas of invertebrate paleontology - the study of prehistoric invertebrates by analyzing fossils and stratigraphy - a branch of geology that studies layers of rock. In particular, his research focus is the study of graptolites - fossils of extinct marine organisms found in rocks. Dr. Melchin received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at University of Waterloo and his Ph.D. at University of Western Ontario. In addition to his faculty position at St. Francis Xavier University, he is an Honorary Adjunct Professor at Dalhousie University, Department of Earth Sciences, and an Adjunct Professor in the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Western Ontario.
International Barcode of Life: creating a searchable index of every species o...
Google Tech Talks February, 26 2008 ABSTRACT Jonathan Rosenberg is pleased to host a tech talk featuring Drs. Paul Hebert and Dan Janzen, who will discuss their transformative (and very Googley) International Barcode of Life project (www.dnabarcoding.org) we hope you can find the time to attend. (For those of you not in MV, we'll send info out after the video has been posted on Moma.) If we generate sufficient Googler interest, we may follow up this talk by taking a group of the most interested and qualified Googlers on a trip to the Costa Rican rain forest for a weekend of field research, education, and development. We will share more details on the 26th. iBOL's goal is to capture, using a handheld device, the unique "DNA barcode" of each and every species on earth, and organize that information to be accessible and useful for everyone (sound familiar?). A DNA barcode is a gene sequence that uniquely identifies any species, and iBOL has already barcoded 35,000 of them. There are approximately 10M species on the planet (half of which have yet to be discovered), so there's a long way to go, but the components for success are in place. During my recent family vacation to Costa Rica I hiked the rain forest, and by the end of the trip could easily identify a toucan, eyelash viper, and three types of monkeys (howling, spider, and Rosenberg offspring). Pretty impressive, right? Then Dr. Janzen showed me a photo of that same rain forest and told me that there were approximately 400 species of animals and plants in that picture, and not a toucan or monkey among them. So it turns out that I'm just as bio-illiterate as everyone else, but Google can do something about this. When we talk about organizing all the world's information, a blueprint of the world's natural biodiversity should be part of it. Speaker: Dr. Paul Hebert Professor Hebert is Canada Research Chair in Molecular Biodiversity at the University of Guelph and directs the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario. Previously, he was Chair of the Department of Zoology, Board Chair at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre at Guelph, and Director of the Great Lakes Institute at the University of Windsor. Professor Hebert is best known for founding the concept of DNA barcoding, and has published more than 270 papers employing molecules to probe biological diversity. Over the past triennium, he has raised more than $30M to construct the world's first barcode 'factory' and the informatics platform needed to support the barcode registration of all multi-cellular life. Together with a few colleagues, Professor Hebert is now leading efforts to establish the $150M International Barcode of Life Project that will barcode 500K species within 5 years. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has received several national and international scientific awards. Professor Hebert completed a BSc at Queen's University, a PhD in genetics at Cambridge University and postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Sydney and the Natural History Museum (London). Speaker: Dr. Dan Janzen Dan Janzen is DiMaura Professor of Conservation Biology, University of Pennsylvania, and Technical Advisor to Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG), a 163,000 hectare conservation area in northwestern Costa Rica. Janzen is a tropical ecologist and biodiversity conservationist with 54 years of experience and 440 scientific papers and books, all focused on the interactions of tropical animals and plants, and for the past 23 years, their permanent conservation as well. He is a member of the US and the Costa Rican National Academy of Science, and recipient of the Crafoord Prize and the Kyoto Prize. He and his biologist wife Dr. Winnie Hallwachs are co-architects and co-constructors, along with many others, of ACG and of Costa Rica's INBio (Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad). He and Hallwachs are currently focused on facilitating the iBOL project to DNA barcode the species of the world for their identification by anyone anywhere at any time, and on facilitating Costa Rica's willingness to permanently conserve the 4% of the world's biodiversity that lives on 25% of the nationa...
Canadian seal hunt
Hello, This letter is mainly copied from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's website, only at the bottom I wrote something that I always add to the petition letters. If you would like to send this letter, you just have to fill in your name and address and sign at the bottom of letter. You can send it per email, fax, or regular mail. stavros.dimas@ec.europa.eu Baby seals, please read my plea (Your name, address, and/or city, state, zip code and country) To Honourable Stavros Dimas Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs B-1049 Brussels Belgium FAX: 32 2 2982 099 Dear Honourable Stavros Dimas, The Canadian government is trying to convince the Parliament that the seals being killed are all adults. This is because the government of Canada defines an "adult" seal as any seal over three weeks of age. If the hunt is "humane" as the Canadian government insists it is then why is it illegal to observe the killing of a seal? The harps seals are also being threatened by global warming which is causing loss of ice habitat and this is not factored into the quota decisions of the government. This is the largest slaughter of a marine mammal species in the world. The Canadian government has rejected offers to create alternative employment or to have people pay the sealers to not kill seals. Seal pups have been filmed suffering in agony on the ice after being clubbed, stabbed, shot or kicked by sealers. The government of Canada tries to link the seal hunt with aboriginal communities despite the fact that the commercial hunt is not an aboriginal hunt. No one is opposing Inuit sealing in the far north. The opposition is to the mass slaughter in Eastern Canada especially Newfoundland where the aboriginal peoples were exterminated a century ago. There are no native communities in Newfoundland. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans has a record of incompetence with regard to management of the fisheries. Every single commercial fishery in Canada is in trouble because of DFO mismanagement. The killing of seals is gruesome torture. Animals feel pain like we do and therefore cruelty to animals for any reason must not be tolerated any longer. Please do everything in your legislative power to ban the killings of seals in Canada. Sincerely, (your signature)
Japan Resumes Whale Hunting
Japan resumes whale hunting in Antarctica despite world wide condemnation. Their reason is given as scientific research. Whaling is the hunting of whales and dates back to at least 6,000 BC. Whaling and other threats have led to at least five of the 13 great whales being listed as endangered.[1] Commercial whaling is subject to a moratorium by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), although the moratorium is hotly contested. Whaling began in prehistoric times, and was initially confined to (near) coastal waters. Early whaling affected the development of many cultures.[citation needed] Although prehistoric hunting and gathering is generally considered to have low ecological impact, early whaling in the Arctic altered freshwater ecology.[2] The development of modern whaling techniques was spurred in the 19th century by the increase in demand for whale oil,[3] sometimes known as "train oil", and in the 20th century by a demand for whale meat. Nantucket, Massachusetts was once the whaling capital of the world. Whale oil is used little today,[5] thus modern whaling primarily has commercial value as a food source. The primary species hunted is the minke whale, the second smallest of the baleen whales. Recent scientific surveys estimate a population of 179,000 in the central and North East Atlantic and 700,000 around Antarctica.[6] Dominoes made from whale bonesInternational cooperation on whaling regulation started in 1931 and a number of multi-lateral agreements now exist in this area, the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW) of 1946 being the most important. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) was founded by the ICRW for the purpose of giving management advice to the member nations on the basis of the work of the Scientific Committee. Countries which are not members of IWC are not bound by its regulation and conduct their own management programs. The members of the IWC voted on 23 July 1982 to enter into a moratorium on all commercial whaling beginning in the 1985-86 season. Since 1992, the IWC Scientific Committee has requested of the IWC that it be allowed to give quota proposals for some whale stocks, but this has so far been refused by the IWC Plenary committee. Norway legitimately continues to hunt Minke Whales commercially under IWC regulations, as it has lodged an objection to the moratorium. Canada left the IWC in 1982 and as such is not bound by the moratorium on whaling. Canadian whaling is carried out by various Inuit groups around the country in small numbers and is managed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The meat obtained from this whaling is commercially sold through shops and supermarkets. This meat is typically not available in southern metropolitan centers such as Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal but is more available in northern communities where whale meat is a component of the traditional diet. There is considerable consternation amongst conservationists about the hunt. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society says "Canada has pursued a policy of marine mammal management which appears to be more to do with political expediency rather than conservation." Some whaling is conducted from Grenada, Dominica and Saint Lucia. Species hunted are the short-finned pilot whale, pygmy killer whale and spinner dolphins. Throughout the Caribbean, around 400 pilot whales are caught annually and their meat sold locally. The hunting of small cetaceans is not regulated by the IWC. In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on the island of Bequia the International Whaling Commission allows natives of the island to catch up to four humpback whales per year using traditional hunting methods and equipment. Whaling in the Faroe Islands has been practiced since at least the 10th century. It is strongly regulated by Faroese authorities and is not approved by the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Around 950 long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melaena) are caught annually, although mainly during the summer. Occasionally, other species are hunted as well, such as the northern bottlenose whale and Atlantic white-sided dolphin. The hunts, called grindadráp in Faroese, are non-commercial and are organised on a community level; anyone can participate. The hunters first surround the pilot whales with a wide semicircle of boats. The boats then drive the pilot whales slowly into a bay or to the bottom of a fjord. Most Faroese consider the hunt an important part of their culture and history and arguments about the topic rarely fail to raise strong emotions. Animal rights groups criticize the hunt as being cruel and unnecessary. The hunters claim in return that most journalists do not exhibit sufficient knowledge of the catch methods or its economic significance. With the ongoing marine pollution from large industrial nations, some speculate that the Faroese people will be without this source of food.
