FIRELOBE DEFOLIATED GRAVITY
Here's the newest time-lapse from the creative people atFirelobe
Celebrations of Death
(1994) This is an experimental video art piece, created by Maria Roussou, that explores visuals associated with death - candle burning, defoliated trees, drums, birds, sand and water. The video is accompanied by a track by Dead Can Dance, "Yalunga", a Persian spirit dance. More information can be found on the EVL website -- http://www.evl.uic.edu/core.php?mod=4&type=5&indi=156
Oak Trees Dying In Astonishing Numbers
For years, the winter moth caterpillar has defoliated and weakened oak trees. Then came the tent caterpillar, and this summer it is a drought. The dry weather brings out other pests.
Caterpillar causing tree casualties
The Enterprise of Brockton, Mass. www.enterprisenews.com Caterpillar causing tree casualties; view story to see video By Elaine Allegrini, Enterprise staff writer WHITMAN — A crane hoisted Jeff Palaza some 40 feet into the air, where the arborist fixed a guide rope around the large limb of a dead tree along Route 18 in Whitman. Back on the ground, Palaza made a cut, one of three needed to clear the tree from a spot close to the Knights of Columbus Hall. "We were getting scared it might come down," said Larry Quirk, a club member who watched the operation. It was just one of hundreds of dead trees that Palaza and his company, McDonough Tree Service Inc. of Whitman and Bridgewater, have removed this year. Several years of damage by a trio of caterpillars — winter moth, forest tent and gypsy moth — have left many trees defoliated, weak or dead, and easily toppled. "We've had double the call for dead trees this year," said Palaza. Throughout the region, on private and public property, trees — mostly oaks — are void of leaves, the limbs brittle. They pose a hazard to people and property, especially during wind and rain storms and with winter ice and snow. The winter's scant snowfall on top of relatively low rainfall in recent years have further stressed the trees, making them susceptible to insects that caused even more damage. "We're reaping a dead harvest of trees," said Deborah Swanson, Plymouth County Extension horticulturist. "I haven't seen this many dead trees in years." The damage extends throughout Plymouth County and beyond, especially in the area from Whitman south. The cities of Brockton and Taunton have escaped large scale damage, according to their respective tree wardens. In between the two cities lies West Bridgewater, where tree warden Christopher Iannitelli has had to triple his budget from $5,000 to nearly $15,000 to keep up with dead tree removal. "In 1991, we took down 14 trees," he said. "In 2006, we took down 63 trees; in (fiscal year) 2007, 105 trees." Crews are already marking the trees that will be cut down beginning in January. Meanwhile, dead limbs overhanging public ways will be trimmed in the fall. Rose Campbell, highway superintendent in Halifax, isn't waiting for winter. "Hurricane season, they'll fall over for sure," she said. The problem exists on private property, too. "Get rid of them now," advises Chris Voelker of New England Tree company of Easton. "They're just going to be a problem later." In this tight economy, he said people are often hesitant to spend several hundred to several thousands of dollars, depending on the job, to remove the trees. Folks are hopeful they will bloom again. "If there's no signs of life, it's unlikely they're going to come back," he said.
The Flight of the Caterpillar
Warning: If you don't like creepy crawlies, then perhaps you should stay away from this video. I had taken some videos of the tent caterpiller plague. Those things are only two inches long and yet they have (together) defoliated many trees in town. In the peak time (a few days ago) it was difficult to walk anywhere without hearing that disgusting "pop" they made when you step on them - and that coming from someone who's not normally squeamish. Anyway, I only could find a MIDI file for the background music, so it sounds kind of, um, MIDI-ish, but I hope it captures what we had to deal with recently. Fortunately, the plague is almost over. I can walk bare feet on the back porch again.

(Text vom 11. April 1968) I tried a translation: I tasted in the deep wells the immovableness, the being motionless, the silence of the water lay between my hands. The young animals defoliated themselves. See, I'm playing the flute, playing it with a twig of a cherry tree, playing the stars on it until the twig will fall to white blossoms Zur geistigen Bedeutung des Begriffs Stern, der ja im Lied vorkommt, kommt mir heute ein Text unter aus Band 1 der "Haushaltung Gottes" "[HGt.01_001,12] Schon steht im Osten ein Stern, welcher dem Orion die Bahn brechen wird, und das Feuer des großen Hundes wird sie alle verzehren; und Ich will der Sterne in großer Menge vom Himmel auf die Erde schleudern, damit die Bösewichte alle umkommen und Mein Licht leuchte allerorten. [HGt.01_001,13] Ich, Jehova, Gott von Ewigkeit, der Wahrhaftige und Getreue zur letzten Warnung. Amen. Helft mir bei Fehlern: 'Already there is to be seen a star in the east, which will break the course (orbit) of Orion and the fire of the Great Dog (Sternbild Großer Hund ?) will eat them all up' Household of God, volume 1 chapter 1, 12, received by Jakob Lorber the 25th of July in 1842 (Graz, Austria) 'What is that east, what is that star, what that Orion, what that fire, and what that Great Dog? Who are those, that get eaten up by the fire of the Great Dog? The "east" is the inner-living word, and through this the true understanding od the holy scripture of the Old and the New covenant. The "star" is the light of Love in this word itself. The "Orion" is Gods Love. The "fire of the Geat Dog" is meaning the fidelity (to be true) of that love, because dog is a sign of fidelity. But those, that the fire will eat up (ruin), are the (hu)men of the world. Thus the sentence above is saying nothing else but with other words: The light of LOVE (the lovelight) of the new word will break course for the Love of deity and the fidelity of this love will ruin all those offenders (transgressors) all unbelievers and all the lukewarth ones, for the east is free, and the star of LOVE is standing yet high! That is the light comprehension (understanding) of these, a bit higher put words. Because I revealed them now even more, they should be noted the more. Amen That is saying the great Orion through his dog. Sehr poetisch.
3h35 e.st. I tried a translation: I tasted in the deep wells the immovableness, the being motionless, the silence of the water lay between my hands. The young animals defoliated themselves. See, I'm playing the flute, playing it with a twig of a cherry tree, playing the stars on it until the twig will fall to white blossoms 4h26 e.st.
Divide Creek Seep 2004 - Oak canopy die-off
This film shows the kind of die-off our oak forest experienced during the natural gas seep in 2004. The leaves had these burnt looking spots on them and overall a lot of leaf die-off occurred. Overall, about 30 percent of the canopy never recovered. Many cedars were impacted then also and so were many pine trees. Methane displaces oxygen underground and in sufficient quantities, can suffocate root systems. We are seeing the same thing happen again, although this time, a lot of cedars are dying too and almost all of our cottonwoods have suddenly defoliated. There has been zero interest from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission regarding this loss of life. In fact, we've only encountered barrier after barrier to a proper investigation of the new seep discovered June 28, 2008. In April, 2004, this region was the focus of a massive natural gas well blow-out that released an estimated (and acknowledged) 115 million cubic feet of natural gas into the environment. EnCana Oil and Gas, USA was found by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to have been responsible for this devastating event. Despite that and despite that the seep is ongoing, and despite us have found a new seep on June 28, 2008, the COGCC continues to allow drilling of this extremely fragile area by the same operator who caused the seep in 2004. And, as of this post (08-06-08) the COGCC (same supervisor in charge of that and this investigation) continues to minimize the full scope of the new seep through a failure to fully investigate. They will not even test the ground water which we drink. EnCana stands to make 6 billion from drilling and fracing this area, and the absence of inquiry helps ensure they get to keep on pursuing it without adequate protection for the environment or the people who live here.
