DEERFIELD BEACH, FLORIDA

'Deerfield Beach' is a city in Broward County, Florida, USA. The city is named for the numerous deer that once roamed the area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 64,583. As of 2004, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 66,189.[1]

Deerfield Beach is located at (26.305223, -80.119817).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.9 mi² (38.7 km²), of which is land and is water (10.05%).

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 64,583 people, 31,392 households, and 16,041 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,810.6/mi² (1,856.7/km²). There were 37,343 housing units at an average density of 2,781.6/mi² (1,073.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 41.26% White, 56.01% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.36% from other races, and 2.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.74% of the population.
There were 31,392 households out of which 16.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.9% were non-families. 40.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.72.
In the city the population was spread out with 15.6% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 29.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,041, and the median income for a family was $44,853. Males had a median income of $35,154 versus $27,451 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,296. About 9.2% of families and 12.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.3% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
Languages

As of 2000, speakers of English as a first language accounted for 75.36%, while speakers of Spanish were at 8.70%. Also, Portuguese was spoken by 4.89%, French Creole 3.42%, French 2.16%, Italian 1.51%, and Yiddish comprised 1.17% of the population.[2]

Marwan Al-Shehhi and several other September 11, 2001 attacks hijackers stayed at the Panther Motel in Deerfield Beach in early September, 2001.[3].
In recent years, development near Deerfield's beachfront has been a major source of local controversy. Groups such as Original Save Our Beach have actively opposed this development.
