Another portrayal of the Croydon Arena
'Croydon Arena' is a proposed arena as part of the
Croydon Gateway re-generation scheme to the main urban district of
Croydon,
London. It is seen as a replacement to the
London Arena which closed a couple of years ago. The scheme is backed by the
London Borough of Croydon. The venue will have a capacity of 12,500 and will stage events such as hockey and due to an agreement being reached with the British Paralympic Association for the arena to become the centre of the association's activities if it is built.
The arena is hoping to make Croydon the cultural centre of south London and the aim is to make it the destination for entertainment and the arts.
There are building on the resources already provided by the
Croydon Clocktowers library, galleries and museum. Testing 1,2,3 offers young bands the chance of stardom and the annual Summer Festival draws people from across the south-east. It will be an indoor sports arena which will be constructed by 2012 although it is not involved in the 2012 olympics. It will be located on the site next to
East Croydon station close to the new
Croydon Tower (also a future project). After the Olympics the Greenwich Arena will be dismantled and reassembled elsewhere in the United Kingdom. The site forms part of the Greenwich Peninsula development area, which is one of the largest development projects in London.
