In
astronomy, the term 'contact binary' or 'common envelope binary star' refers to two astronomical bodies that are so close that they touch each other. Normally, the term may refer either to
stars or to
asteroids. An example of a common envelope binary star is
W Ursae Majoris; similar stars are called
W Ursae Majoris variables.
