![]() | King Constantine I of the Hellenes Constantine I King of the Hellenes. He was born in Athens on 2 August 1868. The son of the longest reigning Monarch in Greece, King George I. His mother was Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. He had Royal Byzantine blood in his veins, from his mother, a direct descendant of Euphrosyne Doukaina Kamatera, the wife of Byzantine Emperor Alexios III the Angelos. King Constantine I was a giant. He stood at 6 feet 6 inches with piercing blue eyes. A Nordic war God with perfect Athenian accent. His German was spoken with the Berlin accent. He was educated at Heidelberg University, the oldest University in Germany, founded in 1386. He married Princess Sophie of Prussia the sister of Kaiser Wilhelm the II, the last German Emperor and the last Prussian King. Constantine the I, admired Kaiser Wilhelm II and his sympathies lied with the Central powers. He spoke Greek perfectly, with the Athenian accent and idioms. He had a practical Prussian mind. Firmly believed the Kaiser will win the War. Constantine I became King after his father King George I of the Hellenes was assassinated by an anarchist in Thessaloniki in 1913. King Constantine I was exiled twice, once by the British and French troops in June 1917 and once by the Venizelist revolutionaries in September 1922, "abdicated", and was succeeded by his eldest son George II. He was the commander of the Greek forces during the Hellenic triumphs of the two Balkan wars. Venizelos on 6.22.1913 sent this telegram to King Constantine I or XII:" Με το ευτυχές τέρμα και του δευτέρυ πολέμου υπό τον μέγαν στρατηλάτην βασιλέα, όστις διά του ξίφους του εμεγάλωσε την Ελλάδα, η φιλτάτη πατρίς καταλαμβάνει την ανήκουσαν αυτή θέσιν εν τω κόσμω και με σταθερόν βήμα θέλει χωρήσει εις ευρύτατον μέλλον, ασφαλίζουσα το μεγαλείον και την ευημερίαν αυτής". Venizelos thanked the King "for increasing the size of Greece with his sword." On 6.28.1913 King Constantine XII responded thus to Venizelos: "Νέα και ένδοξος εποχή διανοίγεται ενώπιον ημών. Εις πίστωσιν δε της ευγνωμοσύνης και της προς υμάς υπολήψεώς μου απονέμω υμίν τον Μεγαλόσταυρον του βασιλικού μου Τάγματος του Σωτήρος. Η πατρίς σάς είναι ευγνώμων". King Constantine responded: "A new glorious era is starting...the Motherland will always be grateful to you." Hellas was united as one. King Constantine was King and commander of the Hellenic Army during the Asia Minor campaign. Inherited the occupation of the Smyrna area and Northwest Asia Minor, occupied during the summer of 1920, where over a million Greeks were living, from Venizelos and Lloyd George. The aim of the march to Ankara campaign, was to get Kemal to accept the Sevres Treaty, end the war and recapture Constantinoupolis from "the Allies", England. Constantin-oupolis was his town. He wanted to finish the job. Dimitrios Gounaris said in defense of the Ankara campaign: "What would become of the Hellenic populations, of the Asia Minor, if we withdraw our forces"? The Italians, Soviet Communists, French and English in that order, they were all, aiding Kemal. Tiny Hellas had to win a titanic struggle against them four and some Venizelists. King Constantine I and Dimitrios Gounaris were not afraid of the odds against them. They tried. The contemporary historians who mock the fact that Hadjanestis was planning the attack on Constantinoupolis, evidently, are not too familiar with the Constantine XI Palaiologos legend nor that more than 300,000 Greeks lived in the Constantinoupolis area. The campaign failed and the Greek civilization of Asia Minor ended with the Venizelos and Kemal agreement of the exchange of Populations. For more on Constantine XI Paleologos: http://rumkatkilise.org/constantineXI.htm Subsequently, Venizelos handed to Kemal, in 1930, the properties of the uprooted Greeks of the Asia Minor. Like a new Chamberlain "he achieved peace in our times" being wined and dined by the butcher Kemal, among diplomatic pomposities, in Ankara. One cannot question Venizelos' brilliance as a strategist, and as one of the greatest political geniuses of Europe in his time; perhaps the greatest political mind that Greece has ever produced. His post 1920 record, however, is tainted. The Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos "O Marmaromenos Vasilias" is still waiting, guarded by the angel, in Agia Sophia, for the Hellenic King, to finish the job. King Constantine XII of the Hellenes, died in Palermo Italy, 3 months later. He was only 55. |

Edited and put together on iMovie HD LYRICS: If I were Constantine, I'd walk around with a sword If I were Constantine, If I asked I'd always get more If I were Constantine, I'd prob'ly be fightin' a war And if I were Constantine, I wouldn't be very poor. If I were Constantine, I'd never chicken out on a fight If I were Constantine, I wouldn't have my highlights If I were Constantine, What I said would always be right And if I were Constantine, I'd ask what the heck is a light If I were Constantine, I wouldn't have to run for prez If I were Constantine, They'd say, "Do what he says!" If I were Constantine, I'd beat you all at chess And if I were Constantine, I wouldn't about the rest But I'm not Constantine So people don't shine my head I'm not Constantine So I have to keep myself fed I'm not Constantine, I don't beat my opponents to red And I'm not Constantine, So I think I'll go to bed |
