"Dixie Chicken" by Little Feat
Dixie Chicken by Little Feat... with images of the original band, Chickens, Feat albums, posters, and assorted southern vamps, sunbelt cowbodys, anthropromorphisms, and Feat photos ... com'on: give me an "F", "E", "A", "T"! Lyrics I've seen the bright lights of Memphis And the Commodore Hotel And underneath a street lamp, i met a southern belle Oh she took me to the river, where she cast her spell And in that southern moonlight, she sang this song so well If youll be my Dixie chicken ill be your Tenessee lamb And we can walk together down in Dixieland Down in Dixieland We made all the hotspots, my money flowed like wine Then the low-down southern whiskey, yea, began to fog my mind And i dont remember church bells, or the money i put down On the white picket fence and boardwalk On the house at the end of town Oh but boy do i remember the strain of her refrain And the nights we spent together And the way she called my name If youll be my Dixie chicken ill be your Tenessee lamb And we can walk together down in Dixieland Down in Dixieland Many years since she ran away Yes that guitar player sure could play She always liked to sing along She always handy with a song But then one night at the lobby of the Commodore Hotel I chanced to meet a bartender who said he knew her well And as he handed me a drink he began to hum a song And all the boys there, at the bar, began to sing along If youll be my Dixie chicken ill be your Tenessee lamb And we can walk together down in Dixieland Down in Dixieland, Down in Dixieland
Hotel Commodore Dance Orchestra (Columbia) - Hold Me
In this post, a superb song, composed in 1933 by Jack Little, Dave Oppenheim, and Ira Schuster. Thanks to a sharp-eyed viewer, I finally found out the sheet music turns out to be of the homonymous, 1920 Art Hickman song. Sorry for the wrong image. Since this song was favorited by several people, however I will leave the song on-line without changing the sheet music. Unfortunately, I could not determine either which band exactly is behind this pseudonym. At least two bands used this denomination: 1) an Edison studio orchestra directed by Bernhard Levitow; it's unlikely we hear this band in the video, since the present recording is a more recent Columbia issue; 2) the Ben Selvin Orchestra, credited as such on Clarion, Harmony and Velvet-Tone, which is a better bet; the only problem is I don't find this side among the American documentation about Selvin recordings which takes into account the pseudonyms used by the band; apparently, Selvin might not have recorded this song. This may well be incorrect, however. On several other American Clarion, Harmony and Velvet-Tone issues, among which I could not retrieve "Hold Me", Selvin was credited Bar Harbor Society Orchestra. Some sources mention Selvin interpretations issued in Britain as Bar Harbour Orchestra (a.o. on Grafton), ...including a "Hold Me" version. There's a reasonable chance this interpretation is one by Selvin's band, although without any guarantee. In any case, the recording presented here is Columbia Vivatonal 2767 D, Mx W152388-2. It was made on April 11th, 1933. Of course I have no idea about either the vocalist or the instrumentists. I would be most grateful for any additional information enabling identification of this band.
Dixie Chicken - Little Feat
"Dixie Chicken," by Little Feat. The original album version, without all the "extra" live material added in. Lyrics: I see the bright lights of Memphis, and the Commodore Hotel. And underneath a streetlamp, I met a Southern Belle. Oh, she took me to the river, and there she cast her spell. And in that Southern moonlight, she sang her song so well. If you'll be my Dixie Chicken, I'll be your Tennessee Lamb, and we can walk together down in Dixie Land Darlin' Dixie Land. Woooo oooo oooooooeeee Well, we made all the hot spots. My money flowed like wine. Then a lowdown Southern whiskey yeah, began to fog my mind. And I dont' remember church bells, or the money I put down, on a white picket fence and boardwalk, or the house at the edge of town. Ahh, but boy do I remember, the strain of her refrain, and the nights we spent together, and the way she called my name. If you'll be my Dixie Chicken, I'll be your Tennessee Lamb. And we can walk together down in Dixieland. Darlin' Dixieland. Woooo oooeee do do do do do do doot do do do do do do do do do d0 doot de do do do do do Well it's been a year since she ran away, Guess that guitar player sure could play. She always liked to sing along. She was always handy with a song. Then one night in the lobby of the Commodore Hotel I chanced to meet a bartender who said he knew her well. And as he handed me a drink, He began to hum a song. And all the boys there at the bar began to sing along: If you'll be my Dixie Chicken I'll be your Tennessee Lamb. And we can walk together down in Dixie Land Darlin' Dixie Land. Wo Wo Wo eeee
