CHIKUSEI, IBARAKI

'Chikusei' (筑西市; -shi) is a city located in Ibaraki, Japan. The city was founded March 28, 2005 from the merger of the city of Shimodate with three towns from Makabe District.
As of March 1, 2005 population data, the city has an estimated population of 113,819 and the density of 554 persons per km². The total area is 205.35 km².
Chikusei city is in the west of Ibaraki prefecture and is located on the west side of Mt. Tsukuba. Chikusei city consists of the former cities of Shimodate, Sekijyou, Kyouwa, and Akeno. They were merged on 28 March, 2003. The population of Chikusei city is about 110,000. There are two rivers in the city, Kinu-gawa and Kokai-gawa. The city is surrounded by nature. A well-balanced city, it develops farming, industry, and commerce. Special products of Chikusei city include koshihikari(rice), nashi (pears), small watermelons, cucumbers, strawberries, and tomatoes.
