Open Innovation in Services
Open Innovation in Services CITRIS Distinguished Speaker: Steve Wright from BT Steve Wright, the Head of Strategic Research at BT, will speak at CITRIS. Abstract: Over the last few years, BT has been transforming its business from a telco to a networked service provider, based on "new wave" revenues. BT's 21st Century Network (21CN) is an important part of that transition. It is an end-to-end IP-based network, which will consolidate BT's complex networks and systems on to a single infrastructure. But it is not simply a network transformation; rather it is a radical overhaul of products, systems, process and a fundamental remaking of our business around the delivery of software defined services. In particular, it will enable the creation of new converged communications and information services -- by BT, third parties and our customers. 21CN is a platform for open innovation in communications services. For a telco, this is a major transformation, particularly for the people at the heart of the systems and processes. Of course, this change is taking place in the context of developments in internet and web services and businesses that are at least as considerable and significant, particularly for BT's transformed businesses, so it would be brave to predict BT's future trajectory. Even so, we discuss some initiatives and developments that we believe will be important for this trajectory. Biography: Steve Wright is Head of Strategic Research in the BT Group Chief Technology Office. Within BT, he is responsible for BT's strategic research investments and external research relationships. He is an engineer, with a degree in electrical sciences from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. from University College London, and has 30 years experience of ICT, in both the communications and computing industries. Dr. Wright's research focus has moved (with the focus of the industry) from materials and devices, through protocols and systems to services and solutions. Prior to joining BT, he worked at HP Laboratories, where he led research in pervasive computing, content delivery, mobility, LAN and Internet technologies. He was also the founding Director of the HP Internet Research Institute.

NASA Future Forum - San Jose, CA May 14th, 2008 Live mixed media event at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, and in the world of Second Life at the Tech's SL Island and other locations! This video is NASA Deputy Administrator Shana Dale's opening speech before the panels began. http://www.nasa.gov/50th/future_forums/sanJoseWithGallery.html Future Forums Story (Post event) http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/highlights/future_forums_2008.html Visionaries Discuss Long-term Strategies for Inspirational Space Exploration, Innovation and Discovery at San Jose Future Forum What better place to generate ideas on shaping the future of NASA's role to inspire, innovate and explore space than California, a state that is home to three of NASA's 10 field centers, prestigious academic institutions and groundbreaking innovation powerhouses? "California's Silicon Valley is a launch pad for academic and fundamental space research that can drive U.S. economic growth," said Shana Dale, NASA's Deputy Administrator, in her keynote address. "NASA is working to encourage more Americans to focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics to create a scientifically literate population." Dale also announced the launch of NASA Education TV (NASA eTV), a partnership with the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA), to produce new "bite-sized" educational television programs for distribution on NASA Television and digital "on-demand" programs over the Internet. Nearly 200 technological gurus, space industry and innovation front-runners, educators and NASA leadership exchanged ideas at the San Jose Future Forum that convened in the heart of Silicon Valley, at the Tech Museum of Innovation on May 14, 2008. Digital participants in Second Life used their "avatars" to ask online moderators questions of the panelists and experienced the Future Forum through movie theater-like screens that played live streaming video and audio. NASA Ames Center Director S. Pete Worden anchored the forum as master of ceremonies. Panel participants included Jim Garvin, chief scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Joyce Winterton, assistant administrator for the NASA Office of Education. They were joined by panel members from prominent businesses and academic institutions, including the University of California, the Commonwealth Club of California, Symantec Research Labs, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Aerojet, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Curriki and many more. Other speakers included Rex Walheim, a NASA astronaut and San Francisco Bay Area native, James Norman, director of NASA's Constellation Systems Division, Doug Comstock, director of the NASA Innovative Partnerships Program and Mike Wiskerchen, director of the California Space Grant Consortium. The forum featured three panel discussions. The "Innovation" panel focused on the development of "green" sustainable business and technology. The "Discovery" panelists discussed the process of conducting research and how to enable the public to participate in "real" science. The "Inspiration" panel focused on education and how to motivate Americans to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Each panel addressed questions from a moderator and from the audience. The San Jose Future Forum is the fifth stop of a nationwide NASA's 50th anniversary tour that includes Seattle, Columbus, St. Louis, Miami, Boston and Chicago. Coinciding with the Future Forum, The Tech Museum displayed a variety of interactive exhibits for thousands of visiting children and teachers to learn about NASA space exploration and science.
