Chick embryo videos

4 day chick embryo
living 4 old chick embryo removed from the egg. the heart is beating and supplying blood to the embryo, and bringing in oxygen and nutrients through the large blood vessels at the bottom of the image. note the very large brain region and the size of the eye. the embryo is still very small compared to the size of the egg.

Chick Embryo - Day 4
In lab of Fall 2007, I participated in a developmental biology lab where we did fairly common shell-less chick embryo cultures. Here is the embryo at day four. The embryo you are viewing is still very much alive and you can clearly see the vitelline structures as well as further development of limb buds. Lots of movement as the embryo shifted in the amnion :)
Chick Embryo - Day 6
Final day of our shell-less chick embryo culture experiment. Also known as the "creepy alien dancing phase." _I_ think it's cute. These weren't done for kicks and giggles, so if anyone has any ethical concerns towards the embryos, you're welcome to them however: these embryos were NOT harmed or tortured during the process of this experiment and were humanely terminated later. I can describe the permission process to anyone who is interested in it as well as the reason why the embryos were terminated rather than grow them the full 21 days to completed development, but I'd rather save it by an individual basis for those interested. This description is already getting lengthy and I'm rather tired as of the time of the posting of the vid :) Sorry for the lack of sound on these videos (not like embryos make a heck of a lot/any noise, but it would have been fun to hear my friend in the background when she had the crap startled out of her by one of these things). Thanks for viewing! :)
Chick Embryo and Heartbeat
At a science museum we saw an embryo chick and it's heartbeat. Look closely at the red blotch on the left of the yolk. You can see it too!
8 days chick embryo
an 8 days chick embryo treated with .02% EtOH.
3 Day Chick Embryo Heart
By removing a 3 day old chick embryo from its yolk sack and placing it under a microscope, the activity and structures of the heart are clearly visible.
8 day old chick embryo
An 8 day old chick I am hatching for my developmental bio class. Notice that the heart is already beating.
Candling a chick embryonic egg in dark-Part:1
A dead egg. A shadow of chick embryo can be observed. There is no blood vessel.
Chick Embryo - Day 5
A shell-less chick embryo culture. Look in my videos for days 4 and 6. Day 5 had a lot of activity and was summed up in my lab journal as, "HOMG Kung-Fu Kickin' Large McBig Huge chick." I've done few things cooler in lab than this. :) A wonderful experience. I also neglected to mention my lab partner and I named our embryo "Seven." As in the Seinfeld episode. And there's the fact it took us seven tries to even get the culture set up properly.

The egg is full of blood vessels. You can see the embryo is moving under the candling lamp.
